His parents divorced when he was twelve. Hiddleston attended Windlesham House School as a child and then the Dragon School in Oxford. He later studied at Eton College before taking a B.A. in Classics at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge. He completed his formal acting training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 2005.
Hiddleston comes from a family with scientific and arts-administration ties: his father worked as a physical chemist and later in biotech, and his mother worked in arts administration and stage management. He has two sisters, one of whom, Emma, has worked as an actress. Several relatives with military and maritime backgrounds are noted in his family history.
