Early life and backgroundFrentorish Tori Bowie was born on August 27, 1990, in Sand Hill, an unincorporated community in Rankin County, Mississippi. Raised by her grandmother after being placed in foster care as an infant, Bowie credited her grandmother—whom she called "Mama"—with shaping her character and supporting her athletic development. She attended Pisgah High School in Mississippi, where she competed in track and field and was also a standout on the basketball court.
Bowie earned a scholarship to the University of Southern Mississippi and completed an interdisciplinary degree in psychology and social work. While at Southern Miss she competed for the Golden Eagles and Lady Eagles in NCAA Division I competition, taking NCAA gold in the long jump at both the indoor and outdoor championships in 2011.
Career
Bowie began to make a mark nationally in the early 2010s. She reached the semifinals of the 100 meters at the 2013 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and finished fourth in the long jump at the 2013 World Championships. Over the next several seasons she moved away from focusing solely on the long jump and established herself as a top-level sprinter.
Her personal bests reflect that range: she recorded 7.11 seconds for the indoor 60 meters (Portland, 2016), a 10.78 in the 100 meters (Eugene, 2016), a 21.77 in the 200 meters (Eugene, 2017), and long jump marks of 6.91 m outdoors (Los Angeles, 2013) and 6.95 m indoors (Naperville, 2014).
Bowie collected multiple domestic titles, including USA Outdoor championships in the 100 meters in 2015 and 2017 and the 200 meters in 2016. On the Diamond League circuit she won races in both the 100 and 200 meters across several seasons, with circuit victories in cities such as Eugene, Rome, New York, Monaco, Doha and others between 2014 and 2017.
At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro she won three medals: a gold as the anchor of the United States 4x100-meter relay team, a silver in the 100-meter dash, and a bronze in the 200-meter race. The following year at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London she won gold in the 100 meters and again as part of the U.S. 4x100-meter relay team.
Bowie briefly returned to international long jump competition at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, finishing fourth in the long jump and placing 22nd in the 100 meters. Her last recorded official competition appearance came in June 2022. During her career she was sponsored by Adidas.
Public profile
Bowie was noted not only for her results on the track but for a crossover presence off it. She appeared on the covers of several publications, including Eastbay, Valentino, Track & Field News, Vogue, and her university magazine. She also walked in fashion shows and was recognized by Forbes on its 30 Under 30 list in 2017.
Her home state honored her achievements: after winning three Olympic medals in Rio, Mississippi designated November 25 as "Tori Bowie Day," and the lane to Pisgah High School was named in her honor. She credited her grandmother repeatedly in interviews as a primary influence on her life and career.
Latest updates
Bowie stopped competing at the world level after 2019 and did not participate in the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021. Her final official competition was in June 2022. She died on May 3, 2023, at age 32. The cause of death has not been specified in the available information.
