Tota Singh Biography

Tota Singh, commonly known as Jathedar Tota Singh, was a senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and long-serving Punjab politician. Over several decades he held

Early life and background
Tota Singh was born on 2 March 1941 in Didar Singh Wala, Moga, in what was then the Punjab region of British India. He completed higher education at DM College, Moga, earning a degree in fine arts. Known locally as Jathedar Tota Singh, he rose from his Moga roots to become a prominent figure in Punjab politics.

Career
Tota Singh spent much of his public life with the Shiromani Akali Dal. He took on party responsibilities early, becoming district president for the party in the large Ferozepur district in 1969, a jurisdiction that at that time included what are now the Faridkot and Moga districts. His administrative roles expanded over the years: in 1985 he was appointed chairman of the Punjab Mandi Board, a post he held until 1987 during the ministry of Surjit Singh Barnala.

Electoral success followed. In 1997 he won the Moga seat in the Punjab Legislative Assembly on an Akali ticket and was named education minister in the Third Badal ministry, serving through 2002. He won reelection in 2002 from the same constituency. During his time as education minister he promoted changes in the school system, including making English a compulsory subject from Class 1 in state government schools and introducing computer literacy programs in government schools.

In 2012 he contested and won the Dharamkot assembly seat and was appointed a cabinet minister with the Agriculture and NRI Affairs portfolio. His tenure in agriculture included challenging moments for the sector and brought criticism from political opponents. In 2017 he contested the Dharamkot seat again but was defeated by the Indian National Congress candidate Sukhjit Singh.

Within the party, Tota Singh held senior roles such as senior vice president and membership in high-level committees, and he served on the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. Party leaders sometimes described him as a mentor figure; at least one senior party leader referred to him as a “father figure.” In September 2021 he remained active in politics as the party named him a candidate from Dharamkot.

Public profile
Beyond elected office Tota Singh was an established public figure in Punjab. He earned the honorific Jathedar as recognition of his seniority within the Shiromani Akali Dal. He also wrote and published; in 2020 he released a book titled Gatha Purkeyan di.

His career included legal and political controversies that received media attention. Allegations arose over recruitment practices at the Punjab School Education Board during his earlier ministerial service; he was later acquitted in that matter. In a separate case, a Mohali court sentenced him in 2012 over misuse of a PSEB vehicle, a sentence that was stayed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court after he appealed. Agricultural issues, including a devastating cotton crop failure tied to pest and pesticide problems during his time as agriculture minister, prompted calls for his resignation from political opponents. Family members were also drawn into public controversy when his son’s name surfaced in media coverage connected to a 2012 Moga scandal.

Personal life
Tota Singh was married to Mukhtyar Kaur. The couple had four children: three sons and a daughter. His sons included Balwinder Singh, who worked with the Punjab Pollution Control Board; Barjinder Singh Makhan Brar, a Shiromani Akali Dal leader; and Dr Jaswinder Singh, a dentist based in Calgary. His daughter, Dr Paramjit Kaur Dhillon, practiced medicine in the United Kingdom. His father was named Babu Singh; his mother’s name is not recorded in the available facts.

Later years and death
Tota Singh continued to be engaged in party affairs into the 2010s and early 2020s. He died on 21 May 2022 in Mohali, Punjab, at the age of 81 after a prolonged illness. He was cremated on 24 May 2022. At the funeral, several of his granddaughters participated in the final rites, an action noted publicly by family members who described it as in keeping with their beliefs about gender equality in family customs.

Latest updates
In the years before his death he remained a visible figure within the Shiromani Akali Dal, holding party posts and contesting elections. His last published book appeared in 2020, and in 2021 he was named again as a party candidate for the Dharamkot assembly seat.
