Early in his international career Boult was recognised for his ability to swing the ball, particularly outswingers, and for an aggressive approach on the field.

Boult developed a reputation as a high-quality new-ball bowler and formed a successful opening-bowling partnership with Tim Southee for New Zealand. A key moment early in his career was his first Test series against Australia in 2011, which is cited as a turning point. In the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Boult recorded a hat-trick on 29 June 2019 against Australia, becoming the first New Zealander and the 11th player overall to take a World Cup hat-trick.
