Early life and background

Tristan Stubbs was born on 14 August 2000 in Honeydew, Johannesburg, and grew up in Knysna, South Africa. Sport featured heavily in his childhood: he played cricket in summer, hockey in winter and took up golf as well. His father, Chris Stubbs, had a background in hockey and that athletic environment helped shape Tristan’s early interests.

As a child he experienced Sever’s disease, a growth-plate condition that caused heel pain and required a period away from sport. After that break he returned to training and development, receiving coaching from Robin Abbott at the Knysna Sports School (later Knysna Sports Academy). He attended Knysna Primary School and later Grey High School in Port Elizabeth, where he captained the school’s first XI cricket team and also represented the school’s under-19 hockey side.

Career

Stubbs emerged through the South African age-group pathway. He was selected for the South Western Districts under-13s at nine years old and recorded early success with a first 50 for the South Western Districts under-11s. He represented Eastern Province at the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in 2017 and 2018, captaining the EP under-19 side in 2018 and finishing the tournament as the leading batsman for his team with 288 runs at an average of 72. Those performances led to selection for SA Schools XI and the SA A team.

He made his first-class debut for Eastern Province on 16 January 2020 in the 2019–20 CSA 3-Day Provincial Cup and his List A debut a month later on 16 February 2020 in the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge. Stubbs moved into the domestic T20 arena on 21 February 2021 when he debuted for the Warriors in the CSA T20 Challenge, finishing the tournament with 102 runs at an average of 34 and a strike rate of 127.5.

Stubbs’ franchise career has included appearances for Mumbai Indians (2022, and retained for 2023), Manchester Originals, Jaffna Kings, and Sunrisers Eastern Cape. He was a member of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape squad that won the inaugural SA20 title, beating Pretoria Capitals in the final. In the Indian Premier League, he originally joined Mumbai Indians as a replacement signing in 2022 and later returned to the franchise for 2023. At the 2024 IPL auction he was acquired by Delhi Capitals at a listed base price.

On the international stage, Stubbs made his Twenty20 international debut for South Africa on 9 June 2022 against India at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. He earned his One Day International debut on 18 March 2023 against the West Indies at Buffalo Park, East London. One standout moment early in his international career came during a T20I series against England in 2022 when he took a spectacular one-handed catch to dismiss Moeen Ali, a play that drew wide attention.
