Early life and background

Trivendra Singh Rawat was born on 20 December 1960 in Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. He completed a master’s degree from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University. Raised in a family headed by his parents Pratap Singh and Bochha Devi, Rawat has lived much of his life in his native region and lists Pauri Garhwal as his hometown.

He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1979 and moved into full-time cadre work as a pracharak in 1981. Those early years in the Sangh shaped his political orientation and network, and he served in various pracharak roles across Uttarakhand and neighbouring Uttar Pradesh through the 1980s.

Career

Rawat’s public life spans decades of organisational work within the RSS and later formal roles in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). After becoming an RSS pracharak in 1981, he held assignments as a tehsil and nagar pracharak in places including Lansdowne, Srinagar (Uttarakhand), and Dehradun. By 1989 he was editing a publication, Rashtradev, in Meerut.

His formal entry into electoral politics came after years of organisational activity. Rawat served as state secretary (organisation) for the BJP in both Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand between 1997 and 2002. He won election to the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly from the Doiwala constituency in 2002 and retained that seat in 2007.

In 2013 the BJP elevated him to national secretary, and he took on additional party responsibilities at the national level, including co-in-charge duties in Uttar Pradesh and in-charge responsibilities in Jharkhand. He was also named to campaign and outreach committees ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and was listed among members associated with the Namami Gange initiative to cleanse the Ganga.

The high point of his state political career came after the 2017 Uttarakhand assembly elections, when the BJP won a decisive majority. Rawat became the 8th Chief Minister of Uttarakhand in March 2017. He resigned from that post on 9 March 2021. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections he won the Haridwar seat in Uttarakhand.

Public profile

Rawat is identified with the BJP and is widely known for his Sangh background, having been associated with the RSS since 1979. Within Uttarakhand politics he has been active on issues affecting farmers and education; initiatives attributed to him include organising farmer outreach events at the local level and efforts intended to improve market access for producers.

Personal life

Rawat is married to Sunita Rawat. He follows Hinduism and is described as belonging to the Rajput caste. He lists reading as a hobby and names the Bhagavad Gita as a favourite book. Physically, he is reported to be about 5 feet 9 inches tall with salt-and-pepper hair and black eyes.
