Trupti Desai Biography

Trupti Desai is an Indian social activist best known for founding the Pune-based Bhumata Brigade and leading public campaigns for women's right to enter a‎

Early life and background

Trupti Desai was born on 12 December 1985 in Nipani, Belgaum, Karnataka. Her family later moved to Pune when she was eight. She has roots in Kolhapur and is a follower of the spiritual leader Gagangiri Maharaj. Desai attended Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University in Mumbai but left during her first year for family reasons.

Career

Desai began working on social issues as a teenager. By 2003 she was active with Krantiveer Jhopdi Vikas Sangh, an organization focused on improving living conditions in slum areas by helping people with essentials such as ration cards, employment and legal assistance. Her early grassroots work led to higher-profile campaigns.

She first gained wide public attention in 2007 when she organized a campaign against alleged fraud at Ajit Cooperative Bank. After setting up the Ajit Bank Sangharsh Samiti to represent depositors, she helped recover funds for a large number of affected account-holders following four years of legal battle.

In September 2010 Desai founded the Bhumata Brigade, a Pune-based NGO built to address injustice toward women and corruption. The organization grew to include thousands of supporters and developed a women’s wing called the Bhumata Ranragini Brigade to focus specifically on women’s issues.

Desai and the Bhumata Brigade pursued several high-profile campaigns to secure women’s access to religious sites. In 2015–2016 she led protests at the Shani Shingnapur Temple in Maharashtra after reports that priests had carried out a cleansing ritual when a woman entered the shrine. The campaign escalated until the state directed the temple board to allow women entry; on 8 April 2016 Desai and other women entered the shrine.

Following Shani Shingnapur, Desai pressed similar demands at other sites. She confronted opposition at the Mahalakshmi Temple in Kolhapur, an incident that resulted in arrests after clashes with temple priests. She also made multiple attempts to enter the Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai in 2016; on one occasion she reached the mosque with security present but was not permitted to enter the inner sanctum.

In November 2018 she sought to visit Sabarimala in Kerala after the Supreme Court overturned restrictions on entry for women of menstruating age, but strong opposition prevented her from leaving the Cochin airport and she returned to Pune after spending many hours there.

Public profile

Desai’s activism brought media attention beyond protests. In 2016 she appeared in an episode of the web series The Angry Goddesses. Political figures took notice of her work; she was given a ticket by leaders associated with the Indian National Congress to contest local civic elections and stood for the Balaji Nagar ward in 2012, though she did not win.

Her campaigns have sometimes attracted controversy and legal trouble. In 2017 she was booked under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act following an allegation involving a doctor. In 2019 her father was sentenced related to a long-running loan dispute that ultimately ended in an out-of-court settlement. During efforts to access Sabarimala in 2019 and 2020 she and fellow activists encountered strong public resistance; in July 2020 she was reportedly attacked with chili powder outside a police office in Kochi while traveling toward the temple.

Desai has been approached by reality television producers and has participated in reality programming. She declined an offer for Bigg Boss 10 unless certain conditions were met, and in 2021 she took part as a contestant on Bigg Boss Marathi 3.

Latest updates

Over more than a decade of activism, Trupti Desai has remained a visible and polarizing figure in campaigns to expand women’s access to religious spaces and to address local grievances affecting ordinary citizens. Her organization, the Bhumata Brigade, continues to be identified with mass protests and public interest litigation aimed at enforcing equal rights and accountability.
