Early life and background

Tsahi Halevi was born on 12 March 1975 in Petah Tikva, Israel. He grew up in a family with Moroccan-Jewish maternal roots while his father came from a long-established Sabra family. As a child and young adult he lived in several countries, including Denmark, Italy, Egypt and Belgium, before returning to Israel. In the late 1990s his family relocated to Tel Aviv.

Halevi developed an early interest in music, learning instruments such as clarinet and guitar. He is multilingual, speaking Hebrew, English, Arabic, Spanish and French. He also trained in sports and movement disciplines—basketball, soccer, tennis, swimming, martial arts and capoeira—and has performed as a dancer.

Career

Halevi’s performing career spans music, theatre, film and television. In 1999 he joined the Mayumana troupe, a percussion-and-dance ensemble, and later collaborated with artists including David Broza and French DJ Philippe Zdar. He formed a ten-piece music ensemble in Israel that performed primarily in English; a number of those songs received radio play. He has worked with groups such as Vision, Groove Redemption and WALAKATA.

In 2012 Halevi competed on The Voice Israel under coach Shlomi Shabat and reached the finals. That year he released his first Hebrew album, Kivvunim (Directions). He continued recording and performing, including a 2014 French duet with Idan Raichel and an Arabic-language rendition of Tamali Ma’aek in 2015.

His theatre work includes performances at Habima Theatre and Haifa Theatre. Halevi moved into screen acting with a film debut in Bethlehem (2013), in which he played the character Razi. That performance brought him critical recognition and industry awards. He became widely known to international audiences for his role as Naor in the Hebrew series Fauda (2015), which later reached Netflix viewers.

On screen, Halevi’s credits span Hebrew-language television and film as well as international projects. Television appearances include Bnei Aruba (2013), Betoolot (2014), Fauda (2015), HaAchayot HaMutzlachot Sheli (2016), Full Moon (2017), the English-Hebrew mini-series Dig (2015) and Kapningen (2023). His film work includes The Kind Words (2015), Damascus Cover (2017), Mary Magdalene (2018), Mossad (2019), Laila in Haifa (2020) and the Hindi-language Akelli (2023), in which he appears as Assad.

Recognition and awards

Halevi received the Israeli Film Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Bethlehem in 2013 and an Asian Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor the following year for the same film. More recently, he and collaborators on the short film A Brush with Death collected several ensemble and acting accolades in 2022 and 2023, including festival honors and awards for Best Ensemble and Best Lead Actor recognitions.

Halevi has been visible in Israeli popular culture beyond acting and recording. He co-owns the 8 mm Piano Bar in the Florentine neighborhood near Tel Aviv and has been featured on the covers of Israeli magazines. He won the first season of the Israeli edition of The Masked Singer in 2020, performing in a rooster costume. He has been married twice. His first marriage was to dancer and dance-academy owner Una Holbrook; the couple divorced. Halevi and Aharish had been together for several years prior to their wedding, and in March 2021 they welcomed a son, Adam Aharish Halevi. Halevi also has an older son, Dean (Thean) Halevi, from his first marriage.
