Tulsi Ramsay was born on 29 July 1941 in Karachi, Sindh, then part of British India. His family later relocated to Bombay (now Mumbai) after Partition. He belonged to the Ramsay family, a filmmaking household that included several brothers who worked together in Hindi cinema.

Career

Ramsay built his reputation as a director and producer working primarily in the horror genre. He made his directorial debut with the film Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche, which began production around 1971 and released in 1972. Over the years he directed and produced numerous projects for both film and television and is credited with helping popularize Hindi horror on screen.

Beyond directing, Ramsay worked in other cinematic roles. He served as a production designer on Purana Mandir (1984), produced titles such as 3D Saamri (1985), and contributed as a writer on Inspector Dhanush (1991). On television he directed episodes of the Zee Horror Show (1993) and was involved with the TV series Nagin (1998) as a producer. Later in his career he ran a production concern under the name Tulsi Ramsay Production, based in Andheri, Mumbai.

Tulsi and his brothers frequently collaborated; family production activities were headquartered at a Lamington Road address in Mumbai where Ramsay Films maintained its offices. Anecdotes from Ramsay’s career include an unusual incident during the shooting of Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche: he and his crew reported digging up a body at the location, and Tulsi later described experiencing eerie moments while on the late-night set.
