Tushar Arun Gandhi was born on 17 January 1960 in Shegaon, then part of Bombay State, India. He grew up in the Santacruz area of Mumbai and attended Adarsh Vinay Mandir, a Gujarati-medium school in Maharashtra. He later studied at the Government Institute of Printing Technology in Mumbai and holds a diploma in printing. He is Indian by nationality and his listed hometown remains Shegaon.

Career

Tushar Gandhi is primarily known as an author and as a public advocate for causes connected to his great-grandfather’s legacy. He founded the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation in Vadodara in 1998 and later moved the organisation to Mumbai, serving as its president. In 1996 he became president of the Lok Seva Trust, set up in central Bombay to support textile mill workers. He has also held trustee and director roles at several organisations, including the Maharashtra Gandhi Smarak Nidhi and the Gandhi Research Foundation in Jalgaon. In 2008 he served as chairman of the Australian Indian Rural Development Foundation and in 2007 acted as a Goodwill Ambassador for CISRI-ISP promoting Spirulina to combat malnutrition.

As an author, Tushar has written on topics related to his family’s history and the final days of Mahatma Gandhi. In 2007 he published a non-fiction book that became a bestseller for a short period in India. He later released an expanded edition in 2021 titled Let’s Kill Gandhi!: A Chronicle of His Last Days, the Conspiracy, Murder, Investigation, Trials and The Kapur Commission. In 2022 he brought out The Lost Diary of Kastur, My Ba, inspired by the diary of his great-grandmother Kasturba Gandhi.

Tushar has also appeared as himself in film. He had a credited appearance in the 2000 period drama Hey Ram and made a brief appearance in the 2009 Hindi film Road to Sangam.

Public profile

As a member of Gandhi’s family, Tushar has been a visible public figure and a vocal commentator on contemporary issues. He led a 241-mile re-enactment of the Dandi March in March 2005, which marked the 75th anniversary of that historic protest and helped secure official recognition of the route from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi as a heritage path. In 2019 he delivered a TEDx talk on preserving social dignity.

Tushar has engaged in public debates around the use of Mahatma Gandhi’s image and legacy. In 2001 he negotiated an agreement with an American marketing company regarding the use of Gandhi’s image for a student-targeted advertisement; the decision drew strong public reaction and he eventually withdrew from the arrangement. In December 2022 he publicly objected to the absence of Mahatma Gandhi’s image on India’s newly introduced digital currency and expressed his response via social media.

He has intervened in legal and civic matters as well: in 2018 he successfully urged the Supreme Court of India to direct states and union territories to take measures to curb violence by cow-vigilante groups. In August 2023 he reported being detained by Mumbai police when he left his home to mark Quit India Day.

Tushar Gandhi is the son of Arun Manilal Gandhi, an author and socio-political activist who died on 2 May 2023, and Sunanda Gandhi, a nurse, author and researcher who died in February 2007. He is married to Sonal Desai; the marriage took place in 1985. The couple have two children: a son, Vivan Gandhi, and a daughter, Kasturi Gandhi. He is the great-grandson of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and keeps an active public connection to the family’s historical legacy.
