Early life and background

Tina Jatin Khanna, known professionally as Twinkle Khanna, was born on 29 December 1974 in Pune, Maharashtra. Raised in a family prominent in Indian cinema, she is the daughter of actors Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia. Her upbringing included schooling at New Era High School in Panchgani and higher studies at Goldsmiths, University of London, from which she earned a Master of Arts degree.

Career

Twinkle Khanna began her public career as an actress with her film debut in Barsaat (1995). She won early recognition for that work and later appeared in films including International Khiladi and Julmi (both 1999), and a Telugu film, Seenu, released the same year. In 2001 she made a theatrical appearance in All the Best.

After marrying actor Akshay Kumar in January 2001, Khanna stepped away from acting, with Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega (2001) marking her last film as a performer. She pivoted to a career in interior design, opening a studio called The White Window in Mumbai's Crawford Market in 2002. Through her design work she completed projects for several well-known clients and served as a mentor at the International Institute of Fashion Designing’s Academy of Interiors.

Khanna has also been active behind the camera as a co-producer on multiple Bollywood productions, including Khiladi 786, Thank You, Tees Maar Khan, Patiala House, and Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty. Her professional interests expanded into writing: in August 2015 she published a nonfiction book titled Mrs Funnybones. She later published a 2023 collection of short stories, Welcome to Paradise, which won the Crossword Book Award in the Popular Fiction category in December 2024.
