Early life and background

Ty Michael Carter was born on January 25, 1980, in Spokane, Washington. He spent early childhood years in the San Francisco Bay Area after his family moved there in 1981, before returning to Spokane in 1991. He grew up in Spokane with a brother and sister, raised primarily by his mother after his parents separated. Carter graduated from North Central High School in Spokane in 1998 and later took biology courses at Los Medanos Community College in California.

Career

Carter began his military service with the United States Marine Corps, enlisting in October 1998. During his time in the Marines he attended Combat Engineer School and served as an intelligence clerk in Okinawa. His marksmanship skills led to training as a primary marksmanship instructor. After deployments that included San Clemente Island and Operation Bright Star in Egypt, he left the Marine Corps in October 2002.

Following a period as a civilian in which he worked a variety of jobs and completed community college, Carter rejoined the military by enlisting in the United States Army as a cavalry scout in January 2008. Trained at Fort Knox, Kentucky, he was assigned to the 3-61 Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division and deployed to Afghanistan from May 2009 to May 2010.

During that deployment Carter was at Combat Outpost Keating in Nuristan Province. On October 3, 2009, COP Keating was the scene of a fierce attack later known as the Battle of Kamdesh. According to military accounts, Carter engaged enemy fighters, resupplied ammunition under fire, rendered first aid, and exposed himself to great danger to reach and treat wounded comrades. For his conduct in that engagement he was awarded the Medal of Honor in a White House ceremony on August 26, 2013.

After the 2009 deployment, Carter served as a Stryker gunner with the 8th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and later returned to Afghanistan on a second deployment in October 2012. He was assigned to the 7th Infantry Division following that deployment and retired from active service in September 2014.
