At 14 he earned a place at the Tata Football Academy after impressing at trials, and he represented Jharkhand at the 2011 National Games in Ranchi.
While at Tata Football Academy, Udanta featured in a number of national youth competitions and exposure tours. He scored freely on an overseas trip to China in 2013 — including a hat-trick against China’s U‑16 side — and was part of the TFA side that won the 2013–14 U‑19 I‑League, finishing as the competition’s top scorer with nine goals. His performances also earned selections to youth camps and All‑Star events, including an All Asia Nike Camp in Australia and the India U22 national camp in Bengaluru.
Career
Udanta turned professional when he signed for Bengaluru FC on 15 July 2014. He made his competitive debut for the club in the Durand Cup on 30 October 2014, coming off the bench and playing the second half in a 2–1 win over Mohammedan SC. He also appeared as a substitute in the Durand Cup semi‑final and successfully converted a penalty in the shootout.
His I‑League debut came on 31 March 2015 in a 4–1 win over Sporting Goa. In his first I‑League season he made ten appearances for Bengaluru FC and also featured in the AFC Cup, where he scored once in three appearances. On 28 April 2015 he provided the assist that helped Sunil Chhetri score the winner in an AFC Cup group stage match against Maziya, becoming the youngest Indian to register an assist in AFC competition. Several weeks later he scored his first AFC Cup goal against Persipura Jayapura, becoming the youngest Indian goalscorer in the tournament.
Bengaluru rewarded his progress with a two‑year contract extension. He continued to contribute across domestic and continental competitions: during the 2015–2016 I‑League season he scored once in 12 league appearances and played seven times in the AFC Cup. He was part of the Bengaluru teams that won the 2015 I‑League title and the 2015 Federation Cup.
In 2015 Bengaluru arranged a training stint for Udanta at English League Two side Oxford United rather than include him in that year’s ISL draft. He trained under manager Michael Appleton and featured in a friendly against Benfica B as part of the experience.
Udanta’s career over the next seasons saw him deployed in multiple attacking roles — midfielder, attacking midfielder, winger and forward — and he continued to appear in domestic league, cup and AFC Cup fixtures. He was a member of the India U23 squad that won the silver medal at the 2016 South Asian Games in Guwahati. On 24 March 2016 he made his senior India debut, playing the full match away to Iran in a 2018 World Cup qualifier.
During the 2016–17 I‑League season Udanta scored three goals from 17 league appearances and contributed in domestic cup competitions and the AFC Cup.
