Early life and background
Uday Chopra was born on 5 January 1973 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and grew up in the city that would shape much of his career. He attended Bombay Scottish School and went on to graduate from Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics. He also studied film-related courses in the United States, including at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinema and at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Uday was raised in a film family: his father was filmmaker Yash Chopra and his mother was Pamela Chopra. His older brother is filmmaker Aditya Chopra; Rani Mukerji is his sister-in-law. He grew up with a connection to the industry and began working on film sets at an early stage.

Career
Uday’s first on-screen appearance came in 2000 with Mohabbatein, in which he played Vikram Kapoor and won the International Indian Film Academy Award for Best Male Debut. Prior to acting, he worked as an assistant director on a number of films directed by his father, including Lamhe, Parampara, Darr and Dil To Pagal Hai. He also made a brief appearance in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and has said he worked behind the camera on that project as well.

As an actor, Uday appeared in a string of Hindi films through the 2000s and into the 2010s. His filmography during that period includes Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai and Mujhse Dosti Karoge! (both 2002), Neal ‘n’ Nikki (2005) and Pyaar Impossible (2010), the last of which he also produced and scripted. He earned recognition for his role as Ali in the Dhoom film series, a part that became one of his best-known screen identities.

Beyond acting, Uday moved into production and business roles. He became CEO of YRF Entertainment, a Hollywood‑based production company associated with Yash Raj Films, and served in an executive producer capacity on international and Indian projects released under the banner. Titles connected to his leadership at YRF Entertainment include the films Grace of Monaco and The Longest Week, both released in 2014.

In 2012 he launched Yomics, a comics imprint from Yash Raj Films, and brought out comic adaptations tied to the studio’s properties, including Dhoom, Hum Tum, Ek Tha Tiger and the character Daya Prochu. In 2013 he announced that the then-upcoming Dhoom 3 would be his final film as an actor.
