Uddhav Thackeray Biography
Uddhav Bal Thackeray is an Indian politician best known for leading Shiv Sena, serving as its editor-in-chief, and becoming the 19th Chief Minister of Maha
Early life and backgroundUddhav Bal Thackeray was born on 27 July 1960 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Raised in a family with deep roots in Maharashtrian politics and culture, he completed his schooling at Balmohan Vidyamandir and went on to graduate from the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in Mumbai. He developed an early interest in photography and later published two books of his images that focus on the people and pilgrimages of Maharashtra.
Career
Before committing fully to public life, Thackeray worked as a professional photographer and published his work in two photo-books, Maharashtra Desh (2010) and Pahava Vitthal (2011). He also tried his hand at advertising with an agency called Chowrang, which did not continue for long. For many years he remained reluctant to enter frontline politics in the way his family was known for, preferring to work at the grassroots level within his party.
His visibility in active political leadership rose after the Shiv Sena’s 2002 Mumbai civic election success, when observers noted his role in that campaign. In January 2003 he was named working president of Shiv Sena, and after the death of his father, Bal Thackeray, he was elected party chief in 2013. Since 2006 he has served as editor-in-chief of Saamana, Shiv Sena’s Marathi mouthpiece.
The most prominent chapter of his political career came after the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections. Disputes with the party’s long-standing ally over seat-sharing led Shiv Sena to break the alliance with the BJP. Shiv Sena then formed a new coalition with the Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress, and on 28 November 2019 Uddhav Thackeray was sworn in as the 19th Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He held the post until his resignation on 29 June 2022, which came ahead of a no-confidence vote.
Public profile
Thackeray is associated closely with Maharashtra-focused politics rather than national-level ambitions. He has been regarded as a leader who has worked through the party’s organizational structure and on local campaigns. Alongside his political responsibilities, he maintained an interest in wildlife photography and recreation such as badminton.
Personal life
Uddhav Thackeray is married to Rashmi Thackeray; the couple met in college and were married on 13 December 1989. Rashmi has been active in party affairs and has played a role in key strategic discussions within Shiv Sena. The couple have two sons: Aditya Thackeray, who leads the party’s youth wing, Yuva Sena, and Tejas Thackeray.
Thackeray’s parents were Bal Thackeray and Mina Thackeray. He belongs to the Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu (CKP) community and follows Hinduism. His family home is Matoshree in Bandra, Mumbai.
Health and other activities
In July 2012 Thackeray underwent angioplasty after being admitted to hospital with chest pain; blockages in his arteries were treated successfully. Outside politics, he continued to publish photographic work that documents religious and cultural life in Maharashtra.
Controversies
Over the years Thackeray and the party’s publications have faced criticism and legal challenges for statements and published material that offended various groups. Incidents noted in the public record include confrontations with political opponents and apologies issued for content published in party newspapers. A defamation case connected to an article in the party mouthpiece was also part of later legal proceedings involving senior party figures.
Latest updates
After leading Shiv Sena through a major realignment in 2019 and serving as Maharashtra’s chief minister, Thackeray resigned from the chief ministership in June 2022 ahead of a no-confidence vote. He remains a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics and continues to be identified with Shiv Sena’s organizational and editorial activities.
