Unai Emery Etxegoien was born on 3 November 1971 in Hondarribia, Spain. He comes from a family with a strong goalkeeping tradition: his father, Juan Emery, and his grandfather both played as goalkeepers. Emery grew up in Hondarribia and is Spanish by nationality. He is a non-religious person and has hazel brown eyes and black hair.

Playing career and transition to coaching

Emery began his footballing journey as a youth graduate of Real Sociedad and played professionally as a midfielder. He was unable to establish himself in Real Sociedad’s first team and continued his playing career in the Segunda División. While playing for Lorca Deportiva CF he suffered a knee injury at the age of 32 that ended his playing career.
