Early life and background

Unmukt Bharat Chand Thakur was born on 26 March 1993 in Delhi, India. Raised in a family with ties to education—his father Bharat Chand Thakur and mother Rajeshwari Chand both worked as teachers—he developed an early interest in sport. He began playing cricket at around six and by the age of ten his family and uncle were considering cricket as a potential career path for him. He attended Delhi Public School, Noida before moving to Modern School, Barakhamba Road while in ninth grade. He later studied at St. Stephen's College, Delhi and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Career

Unmukt Chand established himself as a talented batsman in Indian domestic cricket. He played for Delhi at state level and was part of various domestic and franchise teams including Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians and North Zone. Known for an aggressive approach on the field, he wore jersey number 10 for India Under-19.

His early domestic performances included several notable innings: during his first season with Delhi in 2010 he compiled 435 runs including two centuries, and in the 2010–11 Ranji Trophy he produced a standout 151 on a difficult, seaming track. In October 2014 he scored a century in a warm-up one-day match against West Indies, putting up 101 from 111 balls.

Unmukt's most prominent achievement came at the international junior level. He captained the India Under-19 team that won the 2012 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, and he top-scored with a century (111) in the final while chasing 226 against Australia. That tournament and his leadership there remain central highlights of his playing career.

In 2012 he became the youngest player to appear in the Indian Premier League when he was signed by Delhi Daredevils. He has also been recognized with awards such as Castrol Junior Cricketer of the Year (2011–12) and CEAT Indian Youngster of the Year (2012).

In August 2021 Unmukt announced his retirement from Indian international cricket. Shortly after that announcement he signed with the Silicon Valley Strikers to play in the 2021 Minor League Cricket season in the United States. He made his debut for the Strikers on 14 August 2021 in a Toyota Minor League Cricket Championship match.
