Early life and background

Upendra Limaye was born on 8 November 1969 in Sadashiv Peth, Pune. Raised in a household that combined traditional and liberal influences, he was the first member of his family to pursue acting professionally. Limaye attended New English High School on Tilak Road and later studied at Bharati Vidyapeeth in Pune before training at Lalit Kala Kendra, the Centre for Performing Arts in New Delhi.

From childhood he preferred co-curricular activities to academics and initially wanted to play cricket, though family expectations steered him elsewhere. His interest in theatre grew through school social gatherings and formal study at Lalit Kala Kendra. To support himself while training, he worked at Pune's Alurkar Music House. After his studies he and several friends founded an experimental theatre group called Parichay and spent years honing their craft on stage.

Career

Limaye made his screen debut in the 1994 film Mukta, portraying a social activist. He spent the 1990s and early 2000s developing a theatre practice that included work with Grips Theatre, an experience he has said was demanding and formative because of the physical and imaginative challenges it presented.

His move to Mumbai at the end of the decade brought new opportunities in commercial theatre and television. Encounters with established actors and directors helped him secure early roles in Hindi films, beginning with a small part in Chandni Bar (2001). A more substantial opportunity followed when Madhur Bhandarkar cast him as Inspector Bhosale in a later project, and Limaye subsequently appeared in several notable Hindi films including Page 3 (2005) and Traffic Signal (2007).

Limaye is particularly celebrated for his performance as Tayappa in the Marathi film Jogwa (2009), a role that earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor. Over more than two decades he has acted in roughly 25 films across Marathi, Hindi and Tamil cinema. His Marathi film credits include Dhyaas Parva (2001), Jatra: Hyalagaad Re Tyalagaad (2006), Mee Sindhutai Sapkal (2010), Yellow (2014), and Sarsenapati Hambirrao (2022). In Hindi cinema he has worked in My Name is 340 (2011), 200 – Halla Ho Suresh Patil (2021), Antim: The Final Truth (2021), and appeared in the 2023 film Animal as Freddy.

On television, Limaye has taken roles that draw on his stage experience. He played Sachin Mane in the Sony TV series Tara from Satara (2019–2020), portraying a Kathak teacher, and later appeared in shows such as Mi Punha Yein (2022), Gemadpanthi (2023), and the Disney Hotstar series Criminal Justice: Adhura Sach as Sandeep Shinde.

Across mediums he has sought characters that pose a challenge and allow him to explore inner layers of personality and body language.
