Early life and backgroundUrmilla Kanetkar Kothare was born on 4 May 1986 in Pune, Maharashtra. Raised in a family that supported her artistic interests, she completed a BA at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai and trained formally in classical dance, holding an MA in Kathak. She also studied Odissi under Sujata Mahapatra in Bhubaneshwar during her formative years as a performer.
From a young age Urmilla took part in public cultural events; at age 11 she participated in a program marking India’s 50th Independence Day. Her early exposure to dance and performance shaped the dual path she would pursue in classical dance and acting.
Career
Urmilla launched her film career with the Marathi movie Shubha Mangal Saavadhan in 2006, appearing as the character Supriya. While working on that project she met Adinath Kothare, who was the assistant director on the film and later became her husband. Over the years she has built a steady presence in Marathi cinema and television.
On television she has been part of several Marathi serials, including Oon Paus (2005), Asambhav (2008), Goshta Eka Lagnachi (2009) and Tujhya Veena. Her work in Asambhav earned her critical recognition, with nominations for Best Actress in 2007 and 2008 for the role of Shubhra/Parvati.
Urmilla has also worked in Hindi and Telugu productions. In 2007 she appeared on national television as Raji Khurana in the Zee TV series Maayka.
