Early life and backgroundUrvashi Dholakia was born on 9 July 1979 in Delhi, India, into a family with a Punjabi mother and a Gujarati father. Raised in a Hindu household, she began appearing in media very early: she did a commercial for Lux soap at age six and joined theatre as a child, working with Nadira Babbar's group Ekjute. She started acting on television in her early teens and made an appearance in the sitcom Dekh Bhai Dekh.
Dholakia married young at age sixteen and became a mother to twin sons by nineteen. That marriage ended within two years, and she raised her sons on her own. She is the daughter of Kaushal Dholakia and her father has passed away. She also has a brother named Anurup Dholakia.

Urvashi Dholakia's television debut is recorded as Waqt Ki Raftar (1997), though she had earlier appearances as a teenager in serials such as Dekh Bhai Dekh and Zamana Badal Gaya. Over the years she worked in a number of Hindi TV serials, including Ghar Ek Mandir, Kabhii Sautan Kabhii Sahelii, Kasautii Zindagii Kay, Kahiin To Hoga and Mehndi Tere Naam Kii.
Her breakout and most widely recognized role came as Komolika Basu in Kasautii Zindagii Kay, a performance that earned her multiple Indian Television Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Negative Role in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007, as well as an ITA Milestone Award for the same character in 2010.
