Early life and backgroundUsha Sangwan was born in 1958 in Punjab and grew up in that region. She completed schooling at Government Model Middle School in Chandigarh and pursued higher education at several institutions including Government College for Girls, Chandigarh; Panjab University, Chandigarh; Indira Gandhi National Open University, Delhi; and specialised institutes such as the Indian Institute of Insurance (Mumbai), Indian Institute of Management (Lucknow), Indian School of Business (Mohali) and Management Development Institute (Gurgaon). Her formal qualifications include a Master’s degree in Economics, a Bachelor’s (Honours) in Economics, a post-graduate diploma in Human Resource Management and a licentiate in Insurance, alongside courses in leadership, marketing, human capital management and project appraisal.
Career
Sangwan joined Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) as a direct recruit officer in 1981 and built a career spanning more than 37 years at the corporation. Over the course of her service she worked across core functions including marketing, personnel and industrial relations, housing finance, group business, investment, customer relationship management, corporate planning, information technology, regulatory compliance and international operations.
Her leadership roles at LIC included Divisional Manager positions in personnel and industrial relations, Divisional Manager (Incharge), regional and general manager responsibilities including marketing and housing finance, and a stint as Executive Director from 2009 to 2013. In December 2013 she was appointed Managing Director of LIC, becoming the first woman to hold that role. She served as Managing Director from November 2013 until her retirement on 30 September 2018.
During her tenure as LIC’s senior executive, the corporation recorded strong premium collections and launched a number of customer-focused and technology-driven initiatives. Sangwan was an advocate for using technology and social media to engage policyholders, and under her leadership LIC expanded digital outreach and introduced marketing innovations such as Super-30, a mobile application for customers and agents, SMS-based helplines, college campus programs, Rozgar Melas, LIC Student of the Year and mobile van initiatives.
Sangwan also played a central role in turning around LIC Housing Finance Limited. She implemented structural changes including a hub-and-spoke model, risk-based pricing for retail loans, project and developer rating systems, and a separation of marketing from risk appraisal processes to strengthen corporate governance. She helped take LIC Housing Finance into international markets and was involved in raising funds through global depository receipts.

Throughout her career Sangwan accumulated extensive board-level experience. She has served on multiple boards, including roles at Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Axis Bank Ltd., Ambuja Cements, General Insurance Corporation of India, LIC Singapore, LIC Nepal, LIC Sri Lanka and Grasim Industries. She has also been an independent director at companies such as Trident Group India, Torrent Power and Godrej Housing Finance.
