Early life and backgroundUstad Amanat Ali Khan was born in 1922 in Sham Chaurasi, Hoshiarpur, in what was then the Punjab Province of British India. He belonged to a distinguished musical lineage of the Patiala Gharana: his great-grandfather Mian Kallu and grandfather Ustad Ali Baksh Jarnail Khan were among the gharana’s founders. His father, Ustad Akhtar Hussain Khan, was a classical vocalist who began teaching Amanat Ali music when he was a child.
Career
Amanat Ali developed into a versatile vocalist skilled in khayal, thumri and ghazal, and became widely respected as a leading representative of the fourth generation of the Patiala Gharana. He and his younger brother, Ustad Bade Fateh Ali Khan, began performing together in their teens; the brothers sang a traditional Patiala duet style in which one voice handles the upper notes and the other maintains the lower lines. Early court appearances included performances for the Maharaja of Patiala, and their first mass-audience concert came in 1945.
The siblings achieved broader public recognition after their appearance at the All Bengal Music Conference in Kolkata in 1949, which established them as household names across South Asia. In the decades that followed, Amanat Ali recorded extensively for Radio Pakistan and Pakistan Television and toured internationally. His repertoire included well-known songs such as "Mora Jiya Na Lage," "Pyar Nahi Hai Sur Se," "Dil Mein Meethe Meethe Dard," "Piya Nahi Aaye," and "Chup Dhawen Te," and celebrated ghazals including "Yeh Aarzoo Thi Tujhe Gul Ke," "Mausam Badla," "Yeh Na Thi Hamari Qismat," "Honton Pe Kabhi Unke," "Meri Dastaan-e-Hasrat," and "Insha Ji Utho."
Amanat Ali and Fateh Ali’s favored raga was Ram Saakh, a signature of the Patiala tradition. Their thumri "Kab Aaoge Tum Aaoge" from the album Raag Se Ghazal Tak is remembered as one of their enduring classics. The brothers also performed raga Puriya Dhanasri and devotional asthais such as "Sultan e Alam Nizamuddin Auliya" at major conferences. Beyond classical works, Amanat Ali recorded patriotic numbers including "Chand Meri Zameen Phool Mera Watan" and "Aye Watan Pyare Watan."
In the early part of his career, Amanat Ali worked with several notable contemporaries and is credited with mentoring young singers; he trained Lata Mangeshkar in 1945 during her formative years.
Public profile
Amanat Ali was widely acclaimed for the purity and expressiveness of his voice and was often called a leading maestro of the Patiala Gharana. In recognition of his contributions to music, he received the Pride of Performance Award in 1969.
Several moments from his career became part of his public story. In the late 1960s, while traveling to Nepal, he composed the thumri "Kab aa’o gey" during a turbulent flight, completing it in Raag Bhairavi. In January 1974 he performed the ghazal "Insha Ji Utho," written by poet Ibne Insha, on Pakistan Television; the rendition became one of his most celebrated performances.
Family and legacy
Amanat Ali married and had seven children—three sons and four daughters. His sons included Amjad Amanat Ali Khan, Asad Amanat Ali Khan and Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan, all of whom became singers. His brothers Ustad Bade Fateh Ali Khan and Ustad Hamid Ali Khan were also prominent vocalists. Several members of his family were buried in Mominpura Graveyard, Lahore.
Amanat Ali’s death affected his close musical collaborators. Following his passing, his duet partner and younger brother Bade Fateh Ali Khan withdrew from public performance for a period. Family members have spoken about the lasting emotional impact of his career and passing, and his songs continue to be regarded as iconic performances from the Patiala tradition.
