Early life and backgroundUttam Singh was born on 10 December 2002 in Karampur, a village in Ghazipur district, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a household with limited means; basic comforts were not always available until he relocated to a hostel while pursuing hockey. His father, Krishnakant Singh, worked as a farmer and once harbored ambitions to play hockey himself but stepped away from the sport because of family and financial responsibilities. When Uttam began training around age ten, local coach Thakur Tej Bahadur Singh supervised the academy in Karampur and played a formative role in Uttam’s early development.
After his initial years in Karampur, Uttam moved to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in Lucknow to continue his development. At SAI, he received further technical guidance, including mentorship from senior player Raj Kumar Pal, who helped him refine skills such as dodging, tackling and passing.
Physical profile and playing role
Uttam is listed at approximately 1.68 m (5 ft 6 in) and around 60 kg (132 lb). He plays as a forward and is known for quickness and agility on the field. He wears jersey number 16 for the junior national side — a number he chose in admiration of goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, one of his sporting idols.
Career
Uttam progressed through age-group pathways and qualified for the Junior Men’s National Coaching Camp in 2019. That same year he represented Uttar Pradesh in the Indian Junior Men’s National Championship. His first international exposure came in 2021 when he was part of India’s squad for the Men’s FIH Hockey Junior World Cup hosted in India; the team finished fourth in that tournament.
In 2022 Uttam was selected for the senior national squad that competed at the Hero Asia Cup in Jakarta, where India finished third. He was recognized at that event as the Rising Player of the Tournament. Later that year he was named captain of the Indian junior men’s team for the Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia. Under his leadership India won the Sultan of Johor Cup in 2022, ending an eight-year wait for the title. In the final Uttam contributed in the penalty shootout, converting twice to help secure a 5–4 victory over Australia.
Uttam continued as captain into 2023 and led India to success at the Men’s Junior Asia Cup in Salalah, Oman. India defeated Pakistan 2–1 in the final to retain the Junior Asia Cup title, and Uttam was adjudged Player of the Match in the final.
Injuries and setbacks
Uttam was named to captain a 20-member Indian junior squad for a four-nations tournament scheduled in Düsseldorf, Germany, in August 2023 but had to withdraw after sustaining an injury during a training camp at SAI Bengaluru.

As a forward, Uttam is highlighted for his speed and nimbleness. He cites PR Sreejesh and Manpreet Singh among his inspirations. From Manpreet he has emphasized teamwork and intelligent passing, and he says early-match focus and maintaining possession are important tactical priorities. Uttam has credited his early coach Tej Bahadur Singh, and later mentors, with supporting his development both on and off the field.
Public profile
Uttam’s rise from a village academy to captaincy of India’s junior team has been noted in national coverage. He has been honored with the Jugraj Singh Award for Upcoming Player of the Year in 2022. His role as captain in major junior tournaments and recognition at senior events like the Hero Asia Cup have helped establish his reputation as a promising young attacker in Indian hockey.
