Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy Biography

Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy was a 19th-century leader from Rayalaseema who led an armed rebellion against the British East India Company in 1846. Arrested,试

Early life and background

Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy was born in 1805 in the village of Uyyalawada in what is today Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. Raised in a Hindu family, he was the son of Uyyalawada Peddamalla Reddy. Details about his mother are not recorded in the excerpt. He grew up in the Rayalaseema region and later became known locally as a military governor with authority over a group of villages in the area.

Career

Narasimha Reddy served as a military governor in Rayalaseema and exercised control over a cluster of villages that included parts of present-day Kadapa, Anantapur and Kurnool districts. He resisted British attempts to collect revenue in the region after the East India Company extended its control, refusing to share income from the territory under his administration.

In June 1846 he escalated the conflict with the Company. On 10 June 1846 his forces attacked the treasury at Koilkuntla and then moved toward Cumbum. The unrest intensified after he killed a local ranger named Rudraram, an act that provoked a concerted response from British officials. An officer named Watson was ordered to arrest him but initially failed to capture Narasimha Reddy.

Over the summer of 1846 the rebel leader continued to engage Company forces. On 23 July his group attacked a British detachment at Giddalur and later evaded capture by dispersing into surrounding countryside. In response to his actions, the British declared monetary rewards for information leading to his capture. The army also detained members of his family in Kadapa to pressure him.

To protect his relatives, Narasimha Reddy moved into the Nallamala forest. When the British concentrated their operations around the forest, he returned to Koilkuntla, where he was besieged and taken into custody on 6 October 1846. The excerpt reports that following arrest he was beaten, bound in chains and publicly paraded in Koilkuntla wearing blood-stained clothes as a deterrent to further revolt.

A large number of people were implicated in the uprising. Among 901 accused, many were subsequently acquitted or released on bail; others received prison terms. Narasimha Reddy himself was charged with murder and treason, sentenced to death, and executed by hanging on 22 February 1847 in Koilkuntla. Contemporary accounts recorded a public execution at 7 a.m. that drew a crowd of about 2,000 onlookers.

Public profile

Narasimha Reddy is remembered in the Rayalaseema region for his leadership during the 1846 uprising against the British East India Company. The excerpt notes that several small forts associated with him still stand at Uyyalawada, Rupanagudi, Veldurthi and Giddalur. On the 170th anniversary of his death, a commemorative cover was issued at Uyyalawada on 22 February 2017.

His story has also reached popular culture: the 2019 Telugu film Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy was made about his life and features several prominent actors. The excerpt indicates this film draws on his rebellion as a central element of its narrative.

Personal life

Narasimha Reddy was married and is recorded as having three wives named Siddhamma, Peramma and Obulamma. He fathered at least three sons, including Dora Subbaiah, and had one daughter whose name is not recorded in the excerpt. He had two brothers; no sister is named. The excerpt lists horse-riding, fencing and swimming among activities associated with him.

Latest updates

The available excerpt does not provide ongoing contemporary activity beyond commemorations and the 2019 film. It does record historical milestones: the 1846 attack on the Koilkuntla treasury, his arrest in October 1846, and his execution on 22 February 1847. The forts attributed to him remain as local landmarks and a special cover commemorating his 170th death anniversary was released in 2017.
