V C Sajjanar (IPS) Biography

V C Sajjanar is an Indian Police Service officer known for leading high-profile police operations in Telangana, including the 2019 Hyderabad veterinary-doc

Early life and background

V C Sajjanar was born on 24 October 1968 in Pagadi Oni, Hubballi, Karnataka. He is the son of C B Sajjanar, who worked as a tax consultant and was active in social causes. Sajjanar attended Lions School in Hubballi for his early education, completed undergraduate studies in commerce at JG College of Commerce, and earned an MBA from the Kousali Institute of Management Studies at Karnatak University. He is married to Anupa Sajjanar.

Career

Sajjanar is an Indian Police Service officer from the 1996 batch. His early postings included serving as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Jangaon (then part of Warangal district). Over the course of his career he held roles in state intelligence and investigative units, including postings with OCTOPUS and the Economic Offences Wing (CID) as Superintendent of Police, and later in the Intelligence Wing. He also served as Deputy Inspector General of Police (Special Intelligence Branch) and Inspector General of Police (Special Intelligence Branch).

In March 2018 he was appointed Commissioner of Police for Cyberabad. During his tenure he focused on issues such as women and child safety, IT-sector security, road safety and traffic management, and organised initiatives aimed at reducing crime and supporting the development of the IT industry through events and related security arrangements.

Sajjanar has been associated with several high-profile police operations. He led a 2008 operation in Warangal related to an acid attack case in which the accused were taken to the crime location for a reconstruction; that operation ended with the accused being killed after they attempted to flee and attack officers. In 2019 he led the Cyberabad police team in the case of the brutal gang rape and murder of a young veterinary doctor in Hyderabad. The suspects in that case were located and taken to the site for reconstruction; the confrontation on 6 December 2019 on National Highway 4 near Hyderabad resulted in the suspects being killed in an encounter after they allegedly tried to stone officers and flee.

Public profile

Sajjanar's role in those operations brought him national attention and a reputation among supporters as an officer who confronts violent crime directly. He has been described by colleagues and some officials as disciplined and results-oriented, and was credited by some members of the public and the victim's family for swift action in the 2019 case. At the same time, encounters led by police under his command have drawn criticism from human rights advocates who oppose extrajudicial killings.

Beyond individual incidents, Sajjanar has been credited within police leadership with work aimed at reducing Maoist activity in Telangana during his time with the Special Intelligence Branch; officials highlighted a decline in Maoist presence and movement under strategies developed while he supervised those operations.

Latest updates

As of 2019 Sajjanar was serving as Cyberabad Police Commissioner and continued to be involved in initiatives around law enforcement priorities in the region. Public attention around his leadership in prominent cases remained a defining feature of his profile.
