Early life and background

Vijay Kumar Singh was born on 10 May 1951 in Bhiwani, then part of East Punjab (now in Haryana). He grew up in the same region and completed his schooling at Birla Public School in Pilani. He went on to train at the National Defence Academy in Pune and later attended the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Singh is identified with the Rajput (Kshatriya) community and follows Hinduism.

Military career

Singh joined the Indian Army and served from 14 June 1970 until his retirement on 31 May 2012. Over a four-decade career he rose to the rank of General and held a series of senior command and staff appointments. His commands included the 2nd Battalion of the Rajput Regiment, the 168th Infantry Brigade, Victor Force of the Rashtriya Rifles, II Corps, Eastern Army, and ultimately the office of Chief of the Army Staff. He saw active service in several operations and conflicts, including the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, Operation Pawan and the Kargil War. Reported as the 24th Chief of Army Staff, he was noted as the first commando to reach that post.

Public life and politics

After leaving the Army, Singh entered electoral politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in March 2014. In the general election that year he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Ghaziabad constituency of Uttar Pradesh. On 26 May 2014 he took on ministerial responsibilities as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of the North Eastern Region and was also appointed Minister of State for External Affairs.

Singh retained his Ghaziabad seat in the 2019 general election and subsequently served as Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways. In December 2024 he was appointed to the constitutional post of Governor of Mizoram.

Personal life

Controversies and public disputes

Singh’s later military career included a highly publicised dispute over his recorded date of birth, which led him to pursue legal action while still serving. The matter went to the Supreme Court of India. Around the same period, he made statements in the media alleging that he had reported an offer of a bribe related to army vehicle procurement; the then defence minister publicly said no written complaint had been submitted at the time. A leaked correspondence between Singh and the then prime minister generated further public debate about defence preparedness.
