V. S. Achuthanandan Biography
Veteran Indian communist leader V. S. Achuthanandan rose from early labour organising in Kerala to become the state’s 11th Chief Minister. His long public‑
Early life and backgroundVelikkakathu Sankaran Achuthanandan was born on 20 October 1923 in Alappuzha, then part of the Kingdom of Travancore (now in Kerala). He lost his mother at a very young age and his father when he was still a child. Formal schooling ended after seventh standard; he then worked in his elder brother’s tailoring shop and later in a coir factory, where firsthand experience of harsh conditions drew him into trade union activity.
He began political work through trade unions and joined the State Congress in 1938. Within two years he became associated with the Communist movement, joining the Communist Party of India in 1940. Early in his political life he worked with established Communist leaders and took part in mass struggles, including the Punnapra‑Vayalar uprising against the Travancore princely state, an episode that led to arrest, lengthy periods of imprisonment and time spent underground.
Career
Achuthanandan’s rise through party ranks spanned decades. He moved from local organising in the coir sector to hold organisational roles in Alappuzha division and district bodies. By 1957 he was a member of the CPI’s state secretariat, and in 1964 he was among those who left the CPI national leadership to form the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He served on the CPI(M) Central Committee and later in the party Politburo.
A six‑decade electoral career produced multiple legislative wins. He was first elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from Ambalappuzha in 1967 and returned there in 1970. Subsequent victories came from Mararikulam and, from 2001 onward, repeatedly from Malampuzha. He served three separate terms as Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly and in 2006 was sworn in as Kerala’s 11th Chief Minister, taking office at the age of 82.
During his long public life, Achuthanandan led and supported a range of campaigns. He organised coir workers and other labour struggles early on, pushed for land reform implementation, and led public actions against illegal land grabbing, unregulated lottery operations, and corporate practices he considered harmful to local communities. He was also involved in environmental and agricultural causes, opposing certain large dam and nuclear power projects and objecting to trade arrangements he felt would harm Kerala producers.
As Chief Minister his administration advanced infrastructure and information‑technology projects across the state. Initiatives during his term included support for Kochi Metro planning, the launch of district and regional IT parks such as Technopark expansions and Infopark projects, early steps toward Kannur International Airport and work on the Vallarpadam container transshipment terminal. The government pursued anti‑encroachment measures in hill stations like Munnar, launched drives against illegal land use and took legal action that returned public land in at least one high‑profile case.
Public profile
Achuthanandan was a controversial and polarising figure at times, frequently outspoken on matters of policy and party discipline. He was known for leading public protests and for taking positions that sometimes put him at odds with party leadership; these disputes affected his standing in the CPI(M) Politburo on more than one occasion. His public record included campaigning for tribal rights, protesting environmental health disasters, and opposing corporate projects perceived to damage community resources.
Even in advanced age he remained active: two months before the 2006 elections he was initially denied a party ticket and then reinstated, and in December 2007 he undertook the pilgrimage to Sabarimala without physical support. As chief minister he continued to press for development and reform while maintaining a strong public presence in Kerala politics.
Personal life
Achuthanandan was married to K. Vasumathy. The couple had two children: a son, V. A. Arun Kumar, and a daughter, V. V. Asha. His parents were Sankaran and Accamma, and he had at least one elder brother. He followed a non‑vegetarian diet and was widely known within Kerala as a tough trade union organiser who rose to state and national prominence.

Career highlights and recognition

He served as Kerala State Secretary of CPI(M) from 1980 to 1992 and was a senior figure in the party for many decades.
