Early life and background

Vangipurapu Venkata Sai Laxman was born on 1 November 1974 in Hyderabad (then part of Andhra Pradesh, now Telangana). He grew up in a family of physicians; his father and mother both practiced medicine. Laxman attended Little Flower High School in Hyderabad and later studied at Teri University, New Delhi. He earned an honorary doctorate degree later in life. Outside cricket, he has interests in badminton, squash, tennis and reading.

Career

Laxman made his Test debut for India on 20 November 1996 against South Africa in Ahmedabad and played his first One Day International on 9 April 1998 versus Zimbabwe at Cuttack. He retired from ODIs on 3 December 2006 after a match against South Africa in Centurion and played his final Test on 24 January 2012 against Australia in Adelaide.

On the domestic front he represented Hyderabad and had stints with franchises including Deccan Chargers and Kochi Tuskers Kerala, as well as a spell with Lancashire. Known for a composed presence at the crease, Laxman’s batting was characterized by a preference for the leg flick and an ability to remain calm under pressure.

A defining moment in his career came in 2001 at Eden Gardens, when he scored 281 against Australia. That innings is widely cited as a turning point and is regarded as one of the most significant Test performances of the modern era. He also shared a world-record partnership of 376 runs with Rahul Dravid in a Test match and amassed more than 1,200 runs at Eden Gardens, becoming one of the few Indians to average above 100 at a single ground with over 1,000 runs.

His achievements include being one of the few players to record three centuries in a single ODI series and holding the record for the most catches by a non-wicketkeeper in a single ODI series (12). In 2002 he was named one of Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year.

Post-playing career and roles

After retiring as a player, Laxman moved into coaching and cricket administration. In 2021 he was appointed head of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. In July 2022 he joined the International Cricket Council’s Men’s Cricket Committee. In 2023 he was named coach of India’s men’s team for the Asian Games.
