Varalaxmi Sarathkumar was born on 3 March 1985 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Raised in a family with deep ties to the film industry, she is the daughter of actor Ramanathan Sarathkumar and Chaya Sarathkumar, and her stepmother is the actress Raadhika Sarathkumar. She counts siblings and half-siblings among her immediate family, including younger sister Pooja and a younger half-brother, Rahul, as well as a stepsister, Rayanne Hardy.

Varalaxmi attended St. Michael's Academy in Chennai for her school education. She went on to study at Hindustan College of Arts and Science in Chennai and later attended the University of Edinburgh. Her formal qualifications include a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Microbiology and a Masters in Business Management.
