Early life and background

Varinder Singh Ghuman was born on 28 December 1982 in Talwandi, Gurdaspur, Punjab, India. Raised in a family with a sports background—his father played kabaddi and his grandfather played hockey—he grew up in Gurdaspur before the family later settled in Jalandhar. He attended Lyallpur Khalsa College in Jalandhar and completed a Master of Arts in English. He also undertook formal training in dance and acting.

Career

Ghuman’s entry into bodybuilding began after he saw established competitors at an event in Jalandhar and decided to pursue the sport seriously. He spent several years training under a coach, progressed through district- and state-level contests, and won titles such as Mr. Jalandhar and Mr. Punjab before emerging as Mr. India in 2009. That year he also finished second in Mr. Asia and later earned an IFBB pro card following international competition, including success at the Amateur Australia Championship and the Australian Grand Prix.

He made several notable firsts for Indian bodybuilding: he was the first Asian to reach the Arnold Classic Europe finals, the first Indian to reach premier ranks at the Mr. Universe contest, and the first Indian winner of the Australian Grand Prix in 2011. Ghuman ran a gym called Ghuman’s Den Fitness Gym in Jalandhar and trained a number of Bollywood personalities.

Alongside competitive sport, he expanded into performance and media. After moving to Mumbai to study dance and acting, he appeared in music videos and entered film. His screen debut came with the Punjabi film Kabaddi Once Again (2012), in which he played Shingara Singh. He later appeared in Hindi films including Roar: Tigers of the Sundarbans (as Cheena), Marjaavan (2019), and Tiger 3 (2023). He also performed in stage plays portraying mythological figures such as Lord Hanuman and Bheem Sen.

Ghuman maintained a public fitness profile through magazine covers and social media. He ran a YouTube channel started in 2019 that featured gym and health-related vlogs and endorsed health and lifestyle brands on Instagram. During an international trip for the Arnold Classic he met Arnold Schwarzenegger, who later associated Ghuman with promotion of health products.

Personal life

Ghuman followed a vegetarian diet and emphasized dairy products as a protein source while building and maintaining his physique. He was known for his large stature—about 190 cm (6 ft 3 in) tall with a listed competition weight around 140 kg—and distinctive measurements that reflected his bodybuilding career. He was married and had four children: two sons, Gurtejvir Singh Ghuman (born 12 December 2009) and Bhagwant Singh Ghuman (born 22 October 2020), and two daughters, Gavy Ghuman and Ekamjot Ghuman. His parents were Bhupinder Singh, a retired assistant sub-inspector, and the late Harbhajan Kaur. He had a brother named Bhagwant Singh Ghuman.

Ghuman also kept animals and was an avid dog lover, frequently sharing images of his pet on social platforms. He owned several vehicles and a Harley Davidson motorcycle, and he endorsed products while appearing on fitness magazine covers.
