Vartika Joshi (INSV Tarini) Biography
Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi is an Indian Navy officer best known for captaining the all-woman crew of INSV Tarini that completed the Navika SagarPar
Early life and backgroundVartika Joshi was born in 1991 and grew up in Syalkhet (Syal Khet) village in Garhwal, Uttarakhand. Her family has strong ties to education: her father, P. K. Joshi, served as a professor in the Education Department at Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University in Srinagar, and her mother, Dr. Alpana Joshi, was the head of the Hindi department at a government college in Rishikesh. Vartika attended St. Theresa's School in Srinagar, Uttarakhand, and later studied engineering at Amity University in Noida, where she earned a B.Tech in Aerospace. She went on to complete an M.Tech at IIT Delhi.
Career
After finishing her studies, Vartika joined the Indian Navy in 2010 and was commissioned into the Naval Architecture branch. She rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Early in her naval career she had very limited real-world exposure to the ocean; until joining the Navy she had encountered the sea only through films and photographs.
Vartika gained practical sailing experience on earlier ocean voyages, including a challenging passage from Brazil to Cape Town in 2014 alongside seasoned naval officers. That trip tested her resolve when the diesel generator failed and the engine stopped a few days after leaving Rio de Janeiro, forcing the crew to navigate without electronics for more than a week.
Her most visible achievement came as the skipper of INSV Tarini, the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel that led the Navika Sagar Parikrama expedition. INSV Tarini is a 56-foot sailing vessel built in India and commissioned into the Navy in February 2017. The all-woman six-member crew under Vartika's leadership set out from Goa on 10 September 2017. The expedition met the standard criteria for a circumnavigation: the vessel crossed all longitudes, crossed the Equator twice, and rounded the three great capes — Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope.
Over a voyage lasting 254 days, the crew covered more than 22,000 nautical miles and called at five countries: Australia, New Zealand, the Falkland Islands, South Africa and Mauritius. The journey brought them into demanding conditions, including Southern Ocean storms, winds exceeding 60 knots and waves reported up to seven meters while crossing the Pacific. On 21 May 2018, INSV Tarini completed the circumnavigation and entered Goa harbour.
Public profile
The Navika Sagar Parikrama expedition was flagged off from Goa in September 2017 by then‑Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the presence of senior leaders, and the mission was presented as aligned with national efforts to expand opportunities for women. Vartika and her crew received attention at each port of call from members of the Indian diaspora and local communities.
Vartika's seafaring résumé also includes participation in high-profile national events; she was part of the Republic Day Parade in 2015. She has been associated with other naval sailing activities, including earlier voyages on smaller vessels such as the Mhadei.
Personal details
Vartika is originally from Srinagar, Pauri Garhwal in Uttarakhand and lists painting, singing and travelling among her interests. Her physical stature is listed at approximately 1.63 m (5'4") tall, with a weight around 55 kg. She has black hair and black eyes. As of 2018 she was unmarried. Her listed religion is Hinduism.
