Varun Dua Biography

Varun Dua is an Indian fintech entrepreneur best known as the founder and chief executive of Acko, a digital insurance company that reached unicorn status.

Early life and background

Varun Dua was born on 25 February 1981 in Delhi, India. He grew up in a family headed by his father, Chander Mohan Dua, a former government employee, and his mother, Rashmi Dua, a retired school principal. He later made Mumbai his hometown.

Dua completed a commerce degree at R.A. Podar College of Commerce & Economics in Mumbai and went on to earn a master’s degree in Strategic Marketing and Communications from the Mudra Institute of Communications in Ahmedabad. As a young man he considered a career in news broadcasting, inspired by a television journalist he admired.

Career

Dua began his professional life with an internship at Leo Burnett Advertising in Mumbai in 2002. During that early period he worked on an insurance project that led him to connect with an employee at Tata AIG. That interaction resulted in a position at Tata AIG Life Insurance, where he served as a marketing manager from 2003 to 2007.

He moved to Franklin Templeton Investments in January 2007 as a marketing manager and stayed for about a year. After stepping away from traditional roles, Dua spent time developing the idea of marrying information technology with insurance. In 2010 he co-founded GlitterBug Technologies with Devendra Rane, an engineer from IIT Bombay, focusing on software solutions for the insurance sector.

Building on that work, Dua launched Coverfox in 2014 as an online insurance brokerage and led the business as chief executive. While Coverfox addressed consumer access and distribution challenges, Dua identified pricing and product development as areas that required a different approach. That led him to conceptualize a company that would act as an insurer rather than a broker.

In 2016 he began assembling the team and strategy that became Acko. Even before Acko’s official market debut, Dua helped secure significant investor backing. Acko obtained its licenses in October 2017 and rolled out its first product in February 2018. The company initially offered car insurance and then expanded into mobile device protection and other offerings, including a passenger health product made available through a collaboration with OLA.

Under Dua’s leadership Acko completed a Series D funding round in October 2021 that raised $255 million and brought the company’s valuation to $1.1 billion, achieving unicorn status.

Public profile

Dua’s work in reshaping digital distribution and product design in the insurance industry has raised his visibility in India’s startup ecosystem. He is known for moving from traditional insurance marketing roles into technology-driven insurance solutions, founding and leading both Coverfox and Acko.

Outside of his professional life, Dua and his wife are animal lovers who care for rescued dogs.

In 2024 Dua expanded his public presence by joining the panel of judges on the third season of the television series Shark Tank India, a business-focused reality show.
