Varun Sharma was born on 4 February 1990 in Jalandhar, Punjab, and grew up in the same city. He attended Apeejay School in Jalandhar and later The Lawrence School, Sanawar. Sharma completed a bachelor’s degree in Media, Entertainment and Film Technology from the Institute of Technology and Future Trends (ITFT) in Chandigarh.

He lost his father when he was in the tenth grade. His mother worked as the Head of Department for Fine Arts at Kanya Maha Vidyalaya College in Jalandhar. Varun has a younger sister named Nilima Sharma. He follows Hinduism and comes from a Brahmin family.

Varun Sharma began performing while still in school and continued with theatre through college, where he took on serious stage roles at state and national levels. Before moving into films, he worked in television commercials for brands such as Virgin Mobile, Airtel, eBay and Nissan Micra. He also gained experience behind the camera, assisting director Nandini Shrikent on projects including Talaash and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.
