Varun Tej Konidela was born on 19 January 1990 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. He grew up in the region and attended Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Public School in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad. He comes from a prominent film family: his father is actor-producer Nagendra Babu and his sister is actress Niharika Konidela. Among his extended family are well-known figures such as Chiranjeevi and Pawan Kalyan, and cousins Ram Charan, Allu Arjun, Allu Sirish, Sai Tej and Panja Vaisshnav Tej.

Varun Tej began his screen journey as a child actor, appearing in the 2000 film Hands Up! His debut as a lead actor came with Mukunda in 2014.
