Vashishtha Narayan Singh (Mathematician) Biography

Vashishtha Narayan Singh was an Indian mathematician known for early academic brilliance, advanced study in the United States, and later struggles with ill

Early life and background

Vashishtha Narayan Singh was born on 2 April 1942 in Basantpur, Bhojpur, Bihar, then part of British India. He grew up in a family headed by his father Lal Bahadur Singh, who served as a constable in the Bihar Police, and his mother Lahaso Devi. He completed his school education at Netarhat Vidyalaya and went on to study at Patna Science College.

From a young age Singh showed exceptional talent in mathematics. Accounts from his student years describe him as someone who challenged incorrect instruction and who was able to solve difficult problems by multiple methods. During his undergraduate studies he advanced rapidly through courses, appearing early in final-year examinations and earning top marks.

Career

Singh's abilities attracted the attention of John L. Kelley, a professor at the University of California, who invited him to continue his studies in the United States after being impressed by Singh's solutions to a set of hard problems. Singh moved to the University of California in 1963 and completed a Ph.D. with a dissertation on reproducing kernels and operators with a cyclic vector.

After earning his doctorate, Singh worked in the United States, including a period at NASA. Accounts from that time describe him assisting with calculations during a critical moment on a mission and producing results that later matched repaired computer outputs. He returned to India in 1972 and held teaching and research positions at several leading institutions, including IIT Kanpur, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, and the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata.

Public profile

Singh's career combined early promise and significant contributions with personal difficulties in later decades. In the early 1970s he experienced mental health challenges, and his family noted changes that became apparent after his marriage in 1973. He suffered an episode of epilepsy in 1974 that led to medical treatment and a hospital admission in Ranchi in 1976. In 1989 he disappeared from public view and was located in 1993 in poor condition in Doriganj, Saran district, Bihar. He was subsequently taken to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru for care.

Despite his struggles, Singh continued to be recognised for his earlier mathematical work. In 2013 he was appointed a guest professor at Bhupendra Narayan Mandal University in Madhepura, Bihar.

Later years and public attention

Later reports describe Singh as often walking, speaking to books, and writing mathematical formulae in public spaces such as on walls and railings. Family members have spoken of his long-standing habit of reading from the many books he brought back from the United States, and of his visits to local village schools.

Singh's life and career have attracted interest beyond academic circles. Filmmaker Prakash Jha has said he would like to make a biopic about Singh, reflecting continued public interest in the mathematician's story.

Latest updates

The most recent items in the available record note Singh's guest professorship at BNMU in 2013 and the ongoing public attention to his life and work that followed his return to India and later medical care.
