Vashu Bhagnani Biography

Vashu Bhagnani is an Indian film producer and real estate entrepreneur from Kolkata who built Pooja Entertainment and produced several commercially popular

Early life and background

Vashu Bhagnani was born on 19 April 1961 in Kolkata, India. He left formal schooling in the sixth grade due to family financial difficulties and supported himself by traveling to different cities and selling clothing. Those early experiences of running small businesses laid the groundwork for his later ventures in manufacturing, construction and, eventually, film production.

Career

Bhagnani moved to Mumbai in 1989 to pursue business opportunities. Before entering films he worked in diverse trades including manufacturing television parts, clothing and engaging in building projects. In 1995 he produced his first movie, Coolie No. 1, directed by David Dhawan and starring Govinda and Karishma Kapoor. The film’s box-office success encouraged him to produce further comedies and family entertainers under his banner.

In 1995 he founded Pooja Entertainment India Limited. Under that production banner he produced a string of popular “No. 1” comedies including Hero No. 1, Biwi No. 1 and Shaadi No. 1, many of which performed well commercially and became associated with his name. He followed up with higher-profile projects such as Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1997), which featured Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda, Anupam Kher and Raveena Tandon and was a hit at the box office.

Not all of Bhagnani’s films succeeded. In 2002 Om Jai Jagadish failed commercially and led him to step away from film production for a period. He spent time in the real estate industry to rebuild his finances. After several years working in property, he returned to the film business and in 2009 launched his son Jackky Bhagnani as an actor with the production Kal Kissne Dekha, a romance with science-fiction elements.

In December 2020 Bhagnani reunited with director David Dhawan to produce a remake of Coolie No. 1, starring Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the remake was released on the streaming platform Amazon Prime, with Jackky and Bhagnani’s daughter Deepshikha Deshmukh also credited among the producers.

Public profile

Bhagnani built a public identity as the producer of a series of mainstream commercial comedies in the 1990s and later as the head of Pooja Entertainment. He is recognized for producing several well-known “No. 1” films that became part of popular Hindi film comedy franchises. Physically, he is reported to be approximately 170 cm tall with black hair and black eyes.

Family and personal life

Vashu Bhagnani is married to Pooja Bhagnani; the couple have two children: son Jackky Bhagnani and daughter Deepshikha Deshmukh. Deepshikha worked with him in the family real estate business, and Bhagnani has described her as taking instruction from her parents in a manner that aligns with the way family members learn from their elders. He has a younger brother; his father is named Lilaram Bhagnani.

Latest updates

In June 2024 Bhagnani sold Pooja Entertainment’s Mumbai office as part of an effort to repay outstanding debt. Earlier, in 2024 an FIR was filed in connection with the production of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan alleging non-payment of fees; Bhagnani’s production house responded by contesting the validity of the claim and later filed a complaint alleging misuse of funds in relation to that project.

Physical stats

Reported height: 170 cm (1.70 m / 5'7"). Eye colour: black. Hair colour: black.
