Early life and background

Vasudev Devnani was born on 11 January 1950 in Ajmer, Rajasthan. He completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from MBM Engineering College, Jodhpur. After finishing his studies in 1970, Devnani began his professional life in education, joining Vidhya Bhawan Polytechnic College in Udaipur where he served as a teacher and later as dean for twelve years.

Career

Devnani’s political engagement began through student and social organisations. While at college he became associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and subsequently joined its student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. He served nine years as the Rajasthan state president of the ABVP before entering formal politics with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

He has been the MLA for Ajmer North continuously since first winning the seat in 2003. Shortly after that election he was appointed Minister of State for Education in December 2003. He retained the Ajmer North seat in the 2008 and 2013 state elections. In 2013 he was given independent charge of primary and secondary education in the ministry of then-chief minister Vasundhara Raje. Devnani won the Ajmer North constituency again in 2018 and secured the seat for a fifth time in 2023, winning that election by a margin of 4,644 votes.

In December 2023 he was appointed Speaker of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. Over his legislative career he has remained aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party, representing the party in Rajasthan since 2003.

Public profile

Devnani’s tenure as education minister included a notable revision of Rajasthan’s school curriculum. He advocated for including local heroes, a focus on nationalism, and instruction in the child’s mother tongue at the primary level. The curriculum updates he promoted also incorporated chapters on recent national events and flagship central and state schemes.

Beyond politics, Devnani is active in community organisations linked to Sindhi language and culture, including Vishwa Sindhi Mandal, Sindhi Sahitya Samiti, Sindhi Bhasha Vikas Samiti, and Sindhi Sangeet Samiti. In 2022 he served as the convenor for Rajasthan for the BJP’s "Modi@20" programme.

Devnani is married to Indira Devnani, a retired school teacher; the couple married on 27 June 1974. They have three children—one son and two daughters. His parents are named Bhavandas and Sakha Devnani. He is based in Ajmer and practices Hinduism.
