Vatal Nagaraj was born on 29 May 1949 in Vatalu, Mysore, Karnataka. He grew up in Bengaluru and attended Government High School in Chamrajpet, finishing his formal education at the tenth grade. He belongs to the Lingayat community and practices Hinduism.

Career

Nagaraj’s public life spans activism and electoral politics. He first came to wider notice in the 1960s for participating in anti-dubbing protests against Telugu films being shown in Kannada, and he led actions that brought him into conflict with the authorities. In 1964 he became a Bangalore city corporator and led a two-month agitation that resulted in the removal of a colonial-era cenotaph pillar; a statue of Kempe Gowda was erected in its place.

He won election to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Chamarajanagar constituency in 1989 and retained the seat with a reported victory in 1994; he won again from the same constituency in 2004. In 2009 he contested the Bangalore South Lok Sabha seat but was defeated by Ananth Kumar.
