Early life and background
Veeru Devgan was born in Amritsar, Punjab, in 1942. As a teenager he left home for Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1957 with the ambition of making a career in films. The early years in the city were difficult: after an initial setback that included a brief spell in police custody over unpaid train tickets, many of his companions returned home while he stayed on and supported himself through a series of odd jobs, including work as a car cleaner and carpenter.

Those years of struggle led him to spend time around film studios and to reassess his ambitions. Although he initially considered acting, he discovered a talent for physical performance and martial arts and began training in stunts. His early experience as a stuntman provided the foundation for a long career behind the scenes in action direction.

Career
Veeru Devgan began his film career as a stunt performer, debuting in the 1967 film Anita. His work as a stuntman led to opportunities as an action choreographer, and his first credited assignment in that role came with the 1974 film Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, a break he received from Manoj Kumar.

Over several decades he worked as a stunt coordinator and action director on more than 80 Hindi films. His credits span many high-profile mainstream productions, including Mr. India, Lal Baadshah, Prem Granth, Khoon Bhari Maang, Boxer, Shahenshah, Dilwale and Jigar. As a specialist in crafting on-screen fights and coordinated stunt work, he worked with leading stars of the era such as Dilip Kumar, Vinod Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna and Jeetendra.

Devgan also tried acting in feature films, appearing in Sourabh (1979) and Kranti (1981). He expanded into other creative roles over time: he wrote the script for the 1992 film Jigar and later moved into production and direction. His debut as a producer came with Dil Kya Kare (1999), and he directed Hindustan Ki Kasam, also released in 1999.

Personal life and family
Veeru Devgan practiced Hinduism and came from a Saraswat Brahmin family of Punjabi ethnicity. He married Veena Devgan, who worked as a film producer. The couple had four children: sons Ajay Devgan and Anil Devgan, and daughters Neelam Devgan and Kavita Devgan. Ajay Devgan established a high-profile acting career, and his wife Kajol is listed among Veeru Devgan’s daughters-in-law.
