Early life and background

Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu was born on 1 July 1949 in Chavatapalem in the Nellore region of what was then Madras Province. He grew up in Nellore and completed his schooling at V. R. High School before attending V. R. College, Nellore, and then Law College at Andhra University in Visakhapatnam. His academic record includes a bachelor's degree in Politics and Diplomatic Studies and an L.L.B. with a specialization in International Law.

Naidu developed an early interest in public life while at college. He joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing associated with his political family, and was elected president of the student union representing colleges affiliated to Andhra University.

Career

Naidu’s political rise began at the grassroots and student level and moved steadily into state and national roles. In the early 1970s he was active in regional movements, including the Jai Andhra agitation of 1972, and in 1974 he convened the anti-corruption Jayaprakash Narayan Chhatra Sangharsh Samiti in Andhra Pradesh. He was among those detained during the Emergency period.

His electoral career in state politics began when he won the Udayagiri assembly seat in Nellore in 1978; he retained that constituency in the 1983 election. Over the following decades he became a key organiser and spokesperson for his party. From 1996 to 2000 he served as a BJP spokesperson, and in 1998 he entered the Rajya Sabha as a member from Karnataka.

Naidu held several central government portfolios. He served as Union Cabinet Minister of Rural Development beginning in 1999. After the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured a strong position in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he was appointed Union Minister for Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs and held responsibilities for housing, urban poverty alleviation, and information and broadcasting.

Within party structures, Naidu has also occupied senior leadership roles. He became the national president of the BJP in January 2004 and remained involved in national-level leadership thereafter, serving as National Vice President from April 2005 onward.

A further chapter of his public service came when he was nominated by the NDA as its candidate for Vice-President of India in mid-July 2017. He resigned his ministerial posts to contest the election and assumed office as Vice President on 11 August 2017. He completed his term and retired from that office on 10 August 2022.
