Venkatesh Iyer Biography

Venkatesh Rajasekaran Iyer is an Indian left-handed batting all‑rounder from Indore who represents Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket and Kolkata Knight R

Early life and background
Venkatesh Rajasekaran Iyer was born on 25 December 1994 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Raised in a family with Tamil Brahmin roots, he grew up in his hometown and attended St. Paul Higher Secondary School in Indore before studying at the Institute of Management Studies, DAVV University, Indore. Known to teammates and fans as Venky, he began playing organized cricket around the age of ten and initially featured as a wicketkeeper-batsman through the under-19 levels before expanding his skill set to include medium-pace bowling.

Career
Iyer developed through the Madhya Pradesh age-group system and made his List-A debut for Madhya Pradesh on 11 December 2015 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He recorded a standout List-A performance in the 2020–21 Vijay Hazare Trophy when he scored 198 for Madhya Pradesh against Punjab at Holkar Stadium in Indore, an innings containing 20 boundaries and seven sixes. That knock set a new benchmark for List-A cricket in India, surpassing the previous highest individual List-A score, and helped his side to a dominant 402 for three and a 105-run victory.

He made his first-class debut for Madhya Pradesh in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy against Hyderabad at Indore, where he bowled two overs and took one wicket. Across his first-class outings to date he has compiled runs and contributed with occasional medium-pace bowling; his highest first-class score is 93 and his best bowling figures include a 3 for 46. In List-A cricket he has amassed runs at an impressive average and also chipped in with wickets, while in the domestic T20s he has been used as a bowling option and has taken wickets at an economical rate.

Iyer broke into the Indian Premier League with Kolkata Knight Riders. He was acquired at auction by KKR and has worn the club number 25. His performances domestically and in the IPL established him as a batting all-rounder who bats left-handed and bowls right-arm medium pace. On the international front he made his T20 debut for India on 17 November 2021 against New Zealand at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium and his One-Day International debut on 19 January 2022 against South Africa at Boland Park. As of the latest details in this profile he had not made a Test debut.

Public profile
Iyer stands about 1.83 meters (6 feet) tall and is described as having dark brown eyes and black hair. Off the field he has cited batsmen such as Sourav Ganguly and Alastair Cook among his favourites. He has come from a modest background and worked his way through local academies and age-group cricket in Indore before rising through state and IPL ranks.

Family and personal life
He is the son of Rajasekaran Iyer; his mother’s name is not publicly recorded in the available details. Iyer became engaged in November 2023 to Shruti Raghunathan.

Latest updates
In the November 2024 IPL auction ahead of the 2025 season, Kolkata Knight Riders purchased Venkatesh Iyer for Rs. 23.75 crore, a figure noted as the highest amount ever paid for an all-rounder at auction in IPL history. This signing positioned him as a central figure in KKR’s plans for the season.

Statistics and playing style
As a left-handed top-order batter and right-arm medium pacer, Iyer has produced significant scores across formats, including a prolific List-A record with a high score of 198. In first-class cricket he has demonstrated the ability to contribute both with the bat and ball, while in domestic T20s he has taken wickets at an economy rate below seven runs per over.

Outlook
Still in the prime years of his career, Iyer’s combination of power-hitting and useful seam bowling has made him a valuable asset for Madhya Pradesh and Kolkata Knight Riders. His rapid rise from local cricket in Indore to international T20 and ODI appearances and a headline IPL signing underscores his standing as one of the notable Indian all‑rounders of his generation.
