Early life and backgroundVernon Darryl Philander was born on 24 June 1985 in Ravensmead, Parow, in the Western Cape of South Africa. He grew up in a working-class neighbourhood on the Cape Flats, raised by his mother, Bonny Philander, alongside three younger brothers: Tyron, Brandon and Darryl. He attended Webner Street Primary School and Ravensmead Secondary School. Cricket entered his life early — he began playing at about eight years old and later developed into a fast-rising domestic player.
Career
Philander began his international career in limited-overs formats in 2007, making his One Day International debut on 24 June 2007 against Ireland in Belfast and his T20 debut on 11 September 2007 against the West Indies in Johannesburg. He reached the Test arena on 9 November 2011 versus Australia in Cape Town, where he immediately made an impression by taking a five-wicket haul in that match.
At the domestic level he has represented a number of teams, including Cape Cobras, Western Province and South Western Districts in South Africa, and spells in English and overseas domestic cricket with Devon, Kent, Middlesex, Nottinghamshire and Somerset. He has also played for Jamaica Tallawahs. Philander wore the number 24 jersey for South Africa and domestically.
Philander’s emergence as an international-class bowler was built on a breakthrough 2006–07 season for the Cobras, when he took 30 wickets and produced strong batting returns that helped move him into national contention. Across his early Test career he established notable records: he was the fastest South African to reach 100 Test wickets, achieving that milestone in his 19th Test, and he was the second-fastest player in Test history to reach 50 wickets, doing so in his seventh Test. He also became the fifth player to claim five wickets in an innings in each of his first three Tests.
Known primarily for his outswinger and for being most effective with the new ball, Philander rose to the top of the ICC Test bowling rankings in 2013, surpassing teammates to become the number one Test bowler that year. His performances earned him recognition at home as well: in 2012 he received the SA Sportsman of the Year Award.
Public profile
Philander’s nickname set includes Pro, V-Dawg and Big Vern. He stands about 175 cm tall (around 5 feet 9 inches) and his playing weight has been listed as approximately 70 kg (154 lbs). He has black hair and black eyes and physical measurements reported in some profiles include a 40-inch chest, a 30-inch waist and 14-inch biceps.
Off the field, he enjoys golf and is known to be a dog lover. In 2013 he established the Vernon Philander Foundation, which has been involved in community work such as winter blanket drives. He has been identified as a Christian.

His family background and upbringing in his grandparents’ home are noted in accounts of his early life.
Controversies and disciplinary matters

In July 2014 he was fined for ball tampering during a Test in Galle against Sri Lanka and was penalised 75% of his match fees under the relevant ICC regulation. In April 2015 his selection at the 2015 World Cup was referenced in discussion around team selection and quota policy after South Africa’s semi-final defeat to New Zealand.
