Vidit Gujrathi Biography
Indian grandmaster Vidit Santosh Gujrathi rose from childhood chess promise to become one of India's top-rated players. A World Youth champion and long‑est
Early life and backgroundVidit Santosh Gujrathi was born on 24 October 1994 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He grew up in Indore and attended Fravashi Academy in Nashik during his school years. From a young age he pursued chess competitively, earning early international results that set the stage for a professional career in the game.
Career
Vidit progressed through youth events with notable success. In 2006 he finished second in the Asian Youth Championship under‑12 section. Two years later he won the World Youth Chess Championship in the under‑14 category, a result that also satisfied the final norm required for the International Master title.
He completed his final norm for the Grandmaster title in late 2012 at the Rose Valley Kolkata Open, and in January 2013 he became a grandmaster, the thirtieth player from India to earn that distinction. Vidit went on to be ranked among his country's highest‑rated players and became one of the early Indian players to cross the 2700 Elo threshold.
Throughout his career he has worked with a number of coaches, including International Masters Anup Deshmukh and Roktim Bandopadhyay, and Grandmaster Alon Greenfeld. Vidit has also received support in the form of scholarships from the Sports Authority of India and ONGC, which helped him train at a high level.
Tournament highlights include a bronze medal at the World Junior Chess Championship in Turkey, a third‑place finish at the Rose Valley Kolkata Open, and another third place at the Hyderabad International Grandmasters tournament in 2013. Vidit captained the Indian team that won gold in the FIDE Online Chess Olympiad in 2020 and was part of the Indian squad that claimed the Gaprindashvili Trophy at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest in September 2024.
In head‑to‑head play, Vidit has notable victories, including a win over former world champion Viswanathan Anand in 2019. He has also appeared in high‑profile events such as Tata Steel Chess India, where a 2019 blitz encounter with Magnus Carlsen produced the shortest game of Carlsen's career.
Beyond over‑the‑board events, Vidit has produced instructional chess material, recording two DVDs for ChessBase titled The Fashionable Caro‑Kann Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. During the global pandemic he increased his online presence by streaming on YouTube and collaborating with other creators and players.
Commercially, Vidit has attracted sponsorship. In August 2020 he secured a deal with the meditation app Black Lotus that combined cash and equity. He has also benefited from institutional scholarships that supported his coaching and preparation.
