Early life and backgroundJoseph Vijay Chandrasekhar was born on 22 June 1974 in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu. He grew up in Chennai and attended Fatima Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Balalok Matric Higher Secondary School before enrolling at Loyola College, Chennai to study Visual Communication. He did not complete his degree, leaving college to pursue a career in films.
Vijay is the son of film director S. A. Chandrasekhar and Carnatic vocalist and playback singer Shoba Chandrasekhar. He was raised in a household with both Christian and Hindu influences; he has described himself as a believer who visits places of worship across faiths. He is married to Sangeeta Sornalingam; the couple married on 25 August 1999 and have two children, son Jason Sanjay (born 26 August 2000) and daughter Divya Saasha (born 9 September 2005).
Career
Vijay began as a child actor, appearing in films such as Vetri (1984) and several other Tamil productions through the 1980s. He made his debut as a lead actor with Naalaiya Theerpu in 1992 and went on to build a prolific career in Tamil cinema.
Across more than 65 films, Vijay has become known for combining acting with dancing, stunts and occasional singing. He has recorded songs for many of his projects, including early work and more recent contributions such as “Kutti Story” from Master (2021) and “Naa Ready” from Leo (2023). In the 1990s and 2000s he starred in a series of commercially successful and popular films, with notable titles including Deva (1995), Poove Unakkaga (1996), Thulladha Manamum Thullum (1999), Minsara Kanna (1999), Vettaikaaran (2009), Nanban and Thuppakki (2012), Theri (2016), Mersal (2017) and Master (2021).
Vijay has also worked as a producer on films such as Nanbargal (1991) and Innisai Mazhai (1992). His screen presence and mass appeal earned him nicknames like Thalapathy and Ilayathalapthy as he rose to prominence.
