Early life and backgroundVijay Anand was born on 22 January 1934 in Gurdaspur, Punjab, then part of British India. He studied at St. Xavier's College in Mumbai. Raised in a Punjabi family with strong connections to the film world, he was one of several siblings who entered cinema—most notably brothers Chetan Anand and Dev Anand.
Career
Vijay Anand built a multifaceted career in Hindi cinema as a director, screenwriter, editor, producer and actor. He began working in films as a writer, with an early credit on Taxi Driver in 1954, and made his acting debut the following year in Joru Ka Bhai (1955). His work behind the camera included direction of Nau Do Gyarah (1957) and many films across genres, from thrillers to romantic comedies and family dramas.
He earned wide recognition in the mid-1960s for Guide (1965), a film that won him the Filmfare Award for Best Director and the Filmfare Award for Best Dialogue. His craft as a screenwriter and editor was also honoured: Johny Mera Naam brought him Filmfare awards for Best Screenplay and Best Editing, along with a Bengal Film Journalists’ Association award for Best Editor in 1970. He received another BFJA Best Editor award for Double Cross (1972).
Anand became particularly noted for his picturization of songs, creating memorable cinematic sequences such as those for songs in Guide, Teesri Manzil (1966) and Blackmail (1973). Much of his filmmaking was aligned with Navketan Films, the production company founded by the Anand brothers.
In addition to his film work, Vijay appeared on television; among his TV credits is the detective series Tehkikaat (1994), in which he played Sam D’Silva. His last credited directorial project was Jaana Na Dil Se Door (2001), an unreleased film that he both produced and directed.

Personal life
Vijay Anand married twice. His first wife was Loveleen, described in contemporary accounts as Russian; the marriage ended in divorce. In 1978 he married Sushma (Kohli) Anand, who remained his spouse until his death. He had a son, Vaibhav Anand, who works in the film industry as an actor, director and producer.

Vijay’s personal interests included travel, ballroom dancing (particularly the waltz and foxtrot) and an appreciation for particular films and performers; he counted Nutan among his favourite actresses and Ritwik Ghatak’s Meghe Dhaka Tara among his favourite films. He incorporated elements of his aesthetic sensibility into his filmmaking, famously saying that his camera moved with the music when shooting songs.
