Vijay Arora Biography
Vijay Arora was an Indian film and television actor best known for his roles in the 1970s Hindi cinema and for portraying Meghnad in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramay
Early life and backgroundVijay Arora was born on 27 December 1944 in the Cutch State of British India into a Punjabi Khatri family. He trained at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), completing a two-year acting course and graduating in 1971 with a gold medal. The FTII education followed an early period in which he sought acting opportunities in the film industry and was advised to refine his craft before pursuing mainstream film roles.
Career
Arora began his on-screen career with the Hindi film Zaroorat (1972), co-starring with Reena Roy. He followed that debut with roles in Rakhi Aur Hathkadi (1972) opposite Asha Parekh and then achieved his breakthrough in 1973 with Yadon Ki Baaraat. That film, featuring the song Chura Liya Hai, raised his profile and established him among the leading young actors of the period. He worked in a range of films through the 1970s and 1980s, including Phagun (1973), Sabse Bada Sukh (1973), Roti (1974), Jivan Jyoti (1976), and Sargam (1979).
Beyond Hindi cinema, Arora appeared in Gujarati productions such as Dikri Ane Gai Dore Tiva Jaye (1979) and Lekh Na Mathe Mekh (1981). His filmography spanned more than 110 titles and included later projects like Bade Dil Wala (1983), the horror films Veerana (1988), Purani Haveli (1989) and Aakhri Cheekh (1991), as well as 100 Days (1991) and Jaan Tere Naam (1991). His final film credit is Indian Babu (2003).
Television work brought Arora a notable second wave of visibility. In 1987 he joined Ramanand Sagar’s television epic Ramayan in the role of Meghnad, Ravan’s son; his performance and dialogues from that part became widely recognised. He continued on television with projects such as Bharat Ek Khoj (1988), directed by Shyam Benegal, in which he played Prince Salim/Emperor Jahangir.
Other professional pursuits
Outside acting, Arora engaged in a variety of creative and business activities. He worked with ad and corporate films, applying ISO 9000 standards to their production. He ran a software house that produced advertising and corporate films, participated in events for the Gem and Jewellery Council of India, and promoted imported products including acupuncture massagers and industrial ventilators. He also manufactured playing cards for Indian companies and supplied cards to Warner Brothers for the film Superman.
Public profile
Arora was noted for fitness and yoga and for mentoring students in acting. He maintained a reputation for selecting roles on his own terms and expressed a preference for performances that matched his age and values. In the 1970s he drew attention for being a promising contemporary of other leading actors of the era; his work in Yadon Ki Baaraat in particular contributed to his standing in popular cinema.
