Early life and backgroundVijay Babu was born on 14 May 1976 in Kollam, Kerala, and grew up in a middle-class family in the same town. He attended St. Jude High School in Mukhathala, Kollam, and later studied at The American College, Madurai and Bangalore University, completing a BBM and an MBA. From an early age he showed an interest in performance, participating in school plays and appearing as a child artist in the Malayalam film Sooryan (1982).
Career
Vijay’s professional life has spanned media management, business and film. He began his media career with Star India in Mumbai, where he earned recognition as a top employee. After a period in Dubai running his own business, he returned to Indian television, holding senior roles including COO at Asianet and Sitara TV and later vice president at Surya TV in 2009.
In the early 2010s Vijay transitioned fully into the Malayalam film industry as an actor and producer. He co-founded the production company Friday Film House in Cochin alongside Sandra Thomas and produced several films under that banner. His production credits include Zachariayude Garbhinikal (2013) and the children’s film Philips and the Monkey Pen (2013), which earned a Kerala State Film Award for Best Children’s Film. Friday Film House was notable in 2014 for winning multiple Kerala State Film Awards across categories.
As an actor, Vijay has appeared in a number of Malayalam films. After returning to on-screen work as an adult in 22 Female Kottayam (2012), he gained wider public recognition for the role of Padmachandran (Pappan) in Philips and the Monkey Pen (2013) and for the character Sarbath Shameer in the Aadu film series. His acting filmography also includes roles in Mr. Fraud (2014), Peruchazhi (2014), Double Barrel (2015), Nee-Na (2015), Crossroad (2017) and others.
Vijay has a record of backing projects that took unconventional distribution routes. In 2020 he became the first producer in the Malayalam industry to release a film directly to a streaming platform when Sufiyum Sujatayum premiered on Amazon Prime Video. He has also supported experimental films and emerging filmmakers in the Malayalam industry.

Outside film, Vijay has endorsed food brands, taken part in cooking competitions and shared cooking content on social media. He enjoys travel and football, lists Lionel Messi as a favourite player, and is reported to be fluent in English, Sanskrit, Malayalam and Hindi. He keeps pets and is reported to follow a non-vegetarian diet. Known for maintaining fitness, he visits the gym regularly.
Personal life
Vijay is married to Smitha, who has worked professionally outside India and is noted as the owner of a hospital named Invivo in Kerala. The couple have a son, Bharath. His parents are Subash Chandra Babu (who died in 2021) and Maya Babu; he has a brother, Vinay Babu, and a sister, Vijayalakshmi (Bindhu).
Controversies
In 2022 Vijay faced public allegations of sexual assault and harassment that led to legal complaints and a high-profile police and court process. The matter included multiple complaints and a legal bid for anticipatory bail that was refused by the Kerala High Court. These events have been part of his public record since April 2022.
Latest updates
Vijay’s production work continued to be recognised at the national level in 2023 when Home won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam. His production house remains an active presence in Malayalam cinema, with a history of award-winning films and support for new filmmakers.
