Early life and background

Vijay Inder Singla was born on 1 December 1971 in Ludhiana, Punjab. He completed his school education at Yadvindra Public School, Patiala, followed by higher secondary studies at Multani Mal Modi College, Patiala. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Science from B.M.S. College of Engineering in Bangalore. Singla lives in Sangrur, Punjab.

Career

Singla entered active politics with the Indian National Congress in 2002, taking on the role of general secretary soon after joining the party. In 2005 he was appointed chairman of the Punjab Energy Development Authority, a post he assumed after the death of his father, Sant Ram Singla. He served as President of the Punjab Youth Congress from 2006 to 2008 and later became a member of the Indian Youth Congress Election Commission in 2010.

In the 2009 general election Singla won the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat and represented the constituency in the 15th Lok Sabha until 2014. During his parliamentary tenure he also chaired the Regional Consultative Committee on the Food Corporation of India (Punjab) and was a member of the Regional Direct Taxes Advisory Committee in Patiala. In November 2013 he represented India at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, where he spoke on matters concerning Palestine refugees.

At the state level, Singla has been a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly and has held ministerial responsibilities in the Punjab government. On 28 September 2021 he took charge as the minister overseeing the Public Works Department and Administrative Reforms in Punjab. Within the party organization he has served as national spokesperson, and has been appointed Secretary and Treasurer of the All India Congress Committee. He is also listed as a member of the Indian Council of World Affairs.
