Vijay Karnik (IAF) Biography

Vijay Kumar Karnik is a retired Wing Commander of the Indian Air Force, remembered for leading the repair of the Bhuj airstrip during the 1971 Indo‑Pak war

Early life and background

Vijay Kumar Karnik was born on 6 November 1939 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. He completed a Bachelor of Science degree, studying at Nagpur University in Wardha after attending a local school in Nagpur. He comes from a Maharashtrian Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu (CKP) family; his parents are Srinivas Karnik, who worked for the Indian government, and Tarabai Karnik, a homemaker. He has several siblings, including brothers Vinod, Laxman and Ajay, and a sister, Vasanti.

Career

Karnik was commissioned into the Indian Air Force on 26 May 1962 and served until his retirement in October 1986. He completed the 21 NAV Course early in his career and in 1967 was posted with the IAF’s 6 Squadron in Pune. Over the course of more than two decades he took part in multiple conflicts, including the 1962 Sino‑Indian war and the Indo‑Pak wars of 1965 and 1971.

During the 1971 Indo‑Pakistan war Karnik was posted to Bhuj and served as the officer in charge of the Bhuj airbase. On 8 December 1971 the airstrip at Bhuj was heavily damaged by repeated attacks. Faced with an urgent need to restore the runway so air operations could continue, Karnik organised local assistance to rebuild the damaged strip. He recruited three hundred women from the nearby village of Madhapar to work on repairs, directed how to camouflage completed sections, and advised where to shelter during further air attacks. Their efforts made it possible to restore the airstrip in seventy‑two hours and resume operations during the conflict.

In recognition of his long service, Karnik was promoted to Wing Commander on 1 October 1985. He retired from the Indian Air Force on 14 October 1986.

Public profile

Karnik’s role at Bhuj is widely noted as a significant episode from the 1971 war. The rapid repair of the runway has been described in contemporary accounts as an event of major consequence for Indian air operations and has drawn public and media attention in the years since. For their contribution to the repairs, the group of women who worked at Bhuj received a collective monetary award from the government after the conflict.

Personal life

Karnik married Usha Karnik on 20 February 1965. They have two children: a son, Paresh Karnik, who works with the Times Group, and a daughter, Shalakaa Karnik, who has been involved as a director of a theatre group. Vijay Karnik has maintained interests outside the military: he enjoys golf, travelling and gardening, and is reported to consider golf an ancient Indian pastime.

Latest updates

In March 2019 film producer Bhushan Kumar announced plans to make a motion picture based on Karnik’s leadership during the 1971 Bhuj episode, with Ajay Devgn associated with the project and a cast that was reported to include several prominent actors. The announcement framed the film as a dramatization of the Bhuj airstrip story and Karnik’s role in organising the repairs.

Karnik’s public persona includes open support for Narendra Modi and affiliation with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
