Vijay Krishna Acharya was born on 1 January 1968 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in Kanpur and attended Seth Anandram Jaipuria School there before moving to Delhi for higher studies. He completed a BA in English (Honours) from Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi. From an early age he was active in school plays and drama, and during his college years he pursued theatre more seriously, a path that eventually led him to relocate to Mumbai to work in the entertainment industry.

Career

Acharya began working in the film and television industry as a writer. His first credited film assignment came in 1992 when he assisted Kundan Shah as a scriptwriter on a feature. Over time he established himself as a dialogue writer and screenwriter on several notable projects. He wrote the dialogues for the 2000 film Dhoom and later contributed screenplay and dialogue writing for Dhoom 2. He also worked with director Mani Ratnam as a dialogue writer on the films Guru (2007) and Raavan (2010).

In television, Acharya wrote and directed a number of popular Hindi shows. His television credits include Son Pari, Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi, Life Nahi Hain Ladoo and Shaka Laka Boom Boom. He has said that Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi was a tasteful adaptation of the Colombian series Yo Soy Betty La Fea. He has been involved with several spoof and satirical TV projects, including Ramkhilavan CM and Family, Public Hai Sab Jaanti Hai and Krishna Sharma CA. He also served on the jury for the reality show Cinestar Ki Khoj in 2014.

Acharya’s first film as a director was Tashan (2008), for which he also wrote lyrics for several songs. He continued to write and direct in cinema and is credited with major roles on the Dhoom franchise; his directorial Dhoom 3 performed strongly at the box office and, at the time of its release, became the highest-grossing Bollywood film. He was responsible for story, screenplay control and dialogue writing on Dhoom 3, which also won the Telstra People’s Choice Award at the 2014 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.

In 2018 Acharya directed Thugs of Hindostan, a period-adventure feature adapted from the 1839 novel Confessions of a Thug. The film featured a high-profile ensemble cast.
